    One thing I'm not going to do is hope for Henry to sell the team. That could be an exercise in futility. He can hang onto the team as long as he wants and there's nothing we can do. I haven't hear any good rumors about anyone making offers for the team either.

    I'll take the under, mainly because I think if/when Valentine sees two Cookies fly out of the park he'll be out to the mound on the dead run. But then, who would the long reliever be?

    But Aceves has shown the ability to handle 30+ pitch outings. Less than a week earlier he threw 37 pitches against the Yankees and ended by getting through the heart of the Yankees' order.

    Yeah, that's pretty much what I'm saying. It's an inexact science to say the least. To go to the other night's game, if Aceves walks Mauer and they bring in Breslow to face Morneau, and Morneau hits a rocket somewhere, I'm pretty sure there would be a lot of people saying Valentine was a bonehead for pulling his closer in that situation.

    Francona was always getting criticized for this too. And I think the manager before Francona may have run into an occasional problem with it. Can anybody name the last Red Sox manager who most agreed did a consistently good job pulling pitchers at the right time? Me either.

    I think Ben's greatest joy this year is assembling a powerhouse in Pawtucket.

    Thanks to the new wild card setup and the degree of parity in the league this year, the sub .500 Red Sox are only 4 games out of a playoff spot. So the carrot of hope is still dangled in front of the fans and interest in the season hasn't been snuffed out yet.

    Valentine has done a good job with the bullpen. But that may be the only thing he's done well.

    If this team deliberately set out to cause as much misery as possible for its fans this year, it couldn't have done a better job than this.

    His ineptitude against lefties is worse than his ineptitude against righties.

    Valentine has been pretty consistent with this, batting CC second against righties and seventh against lefties.
