    Clay lowered his ERA to 4.24 on August 10. Now it's 4.22. This is going to be one of the few Red Sox teams in history without a single starting pitcher with an ERA under 4. (Minimum of 15 starts.)

    I don't think everybody is writing off the Red Sox for 2013 and 2014. But the reality is, they've missed the playoffs 3 straight years in spite of their large financial advantage. Now they have to virtually start from scratch again. And the Orioles and the A's have joined the Yankees, Rays, Rangers and Angels as our competition for spots. Making the playoffs next year is a tall order indeed, IMO. Not impossible but looking like an outside chance at this point.

    I whined about the Yankees when they had their spending explosion after 2008 and then won it all. But in the 3 seasons since then, Hal Steinbrenner seems to have really reigned it in and they are making some smart moves without adding much payroll. In 2003-2004 the Red Sox were spending significantly less than the Yankees and being smarter than them. I enjoyed that a lot. But as our spending went up we got much stupider. It's not an irreversible process, and hopefully the Dodgers trade was just the start of being a smart organization again.

    Reddick has some horrific slumps. His 2012 averages are now lower than his 2011 averages.

    I think it's good. Not sure about Varitek as a manager but I think he might be a great pitching coach.

    The Yankees have been getting pieces that fit, like Granderson, Martin, Kuroda, even guys like Ibanez and Ichiro. I questioned the Granderson trade a bit at the time, but he's got back to back 40 HR seasons.

    I've thought about it and I'm sticking to what I said. We've narrowed the payroll gap enormously, but they've made better personnel moves than we have the last few years. If we had this discussion before this year I might have agreed with you. But when we assess the state of the team in 2012 there's no getting around the fact that a lot of mistakes have been made that have contributed to where the team is now.

    The Yankees are on their way to making the playoffs for the 17th time in 18 years. The one year they missed, in 2008, they still won 89 games. The last time they finished in the basement was 1990, back when no team had a payroll higher than 24 million. So I don't think the comparison to the Yankees stands up. They have clearly been a lot better than us at sustaining success.

    It's very debatable that the bullpen would have been great with Bailey. The ERA's of Bailey, Melancon and Aceves are what they are. Bailey is a small sample but I wouldn't bet the house on this guy. In short the back end of the bullpen has been poor. The middle relief numbers have been very good.

    ERA comparison Aceves 5.31 Bailey 6.23 Melancon 6.64 Papelbon 2.33 All those who said it was a big mistake letting Papelbon go were dead right.

    I think Showalter should and will win it, absolutely. Mind you, a big key to the O's winning all those extra-inning games has been the incredible work by their bullpen. Just think of all the zeroes those guys have been putting up in the extra innings to allow their team to win. As far as Francona not winning MOY, or even finishing in the top 3 in voting, I attribute a lot of this to the voters-the writers-often not having a clue who or why to vote for. Because manager is a very intangible position. Often it's the guy whose team improved the most in W-L record from the previous year. That's the easiest way to do it. I did some digging into this and found that for 9 straight years, from 2000 to 2008, the AL MOY was the guy whose team had the biggest increase in wins from the previous year. Francona inherited a 95-win team with a lot of talent and a big payroll, so it was always going to be hard for him to convince anybody he was a difference-maker.

    I'm just frustrated that a team with our resources has seen its pitching slide steadily to the bottom of the league the last few years.

    Maybe our organization is just doing a s***** job at coaching and developing pitchers. The track record the last 5+ years would indicate that. We're getting nothing out of our system. And it's kind of funny that a guy like this would get picked up by another organization and succeed right away.

    Seriously? I didn't know a thing about Gonzalez. He was in the minors. The Orioles scouts saw something in him that our scouts didn't. It looks to me like our scouts screwed up. Simple as that.

    Too bad we couldn't get somebody like Miguel Gonzalez, the pitcher who beat us last night. Oh wait, we did have Gonzalez, for 3 effing years. We gave up on him, the O's signed him, and he has a lower ERA than any of our starters. More great work by the Sox organization.

    Yes, that's the bright side of sucking this bad. Good players are useless to us, so there's no need to pay anybody good money.

    I don't think so, because we'd have to overpay him.

    I can't see much point. If Rivera does come back it'll be for one year only, and I doubt he has any interest in wrapping a career as a Yankee legend with a one-off for another team.

    I'm not so sure it's ridiculous. We paid him 12 million last year. The AAV of his contract with the Phillies is 12.5 million. 4 years is long for a reliever, but Papelbon has proven himself to be very durable, and this year is no exception.

    Some of these overpaid guys can be pretty useful. Overpaid Ortiz had the highest OPS in the league when he got hurt.

    The Red Sox are for sale and Cano is suspended. Keep it comin' folks.

    And, as Palodios keeps pointing out, he's only mid-tier.

    They certainly could contend for a playoff spot, considering that they now only have about $50 million in payroll committed for next year. The rest is up to Benny Boy.

    So why don't the organizations hire smart guys as managers? Maybe it's because if you're smart you don't want to be a baseball manager.
