  1. Yeah, it'd be kind of nice if somebody could ask Henry for specifics of what he meant by that. The only thing I can see is that Crawford was not a great OBP guy.
  2. Seems like a smart idea to me.
  3. What I'm suggesting is that some of the smart baseball decisions ahead for this team may involve taking a pass on moves that will make the team better in the short term, in favor of moves that make it better in the long term. Josh Hamilton is an example. Assuming he goes to free agency, he is definitely a player who would make us a better team next year. But he's also a very expensive and risky investment and his contract could end up as another albatross. Will we be able to stay away from big free-agent signings the next few years, especially with all this money freed up?
  4. No argument there. Needless to say this upcoming offseason will be interesting. As I said before I think the team is going to be bad again next year because there's no way to fix it that fast. It'll be tempting to do something like sign Josh Hamilton, but in the long run that's probably a stupid move.
  5. Why is it abhorrent? A major league baseball team is an entertainment entity at least as much as it is a sports entity. The audience's needs and expectations are taken into consideration. Red Sox fans were sending a message that they weren't prepared to be patient. When Epstein uttered the words 'bridge year', the general reaction was 'f*** bridge years, this is the Red Sox and we want to go after another title right now.' I'm not trying to defend any of it. It has been a catastrophe. But I think we need to learn some lessons from it.
  6. But if the FO didn't make any big moves after 2010, if they didn't get Gonzalez and Crawford, if they preached patience instead, do you think the fans were going to buy that? My recollection is that people were generally unhappy and restless and thought we needed to add some big pieces after not winning a playoff game in 2 years.
  7. Personally I think the 'philosophical change' had a lot to do with a loss of patience and probably a perceived lack of patience on the part of the fanbase. After we got swept out in 2009 Sox fans were not a happy group. We won it all in 2007, which was great, but then we lost to the Rays in 2008 in a series everybody felt we should have won. Then 3 and out in 2009. It seemed like we were going downhill fast. Add to that the fact that the farm system had suddenly gone bone dry on MLB-ready players. What do you in that situation? When you're a rich team it's pretty tempting to just reach into the wallet for expensive fixes. You want to keep the fans happy because you want to keep that sellout streak going and keep the money pumping into the tills.
  8. The good news is, they did clean house financially in a big way with the Dodger trade. Now the question is, do Lucchino and Cherington have what it takes to make the right moves to build a strong team over the next couple of years. Some skepticism on that is certainly warranted. Personally I still have hope for Cherington. But he better not f*** up.
  9. Gonzo with the 2-run double in the 9th to lift the Dodgers to a 5-4 walkoff win.
  10. I'll go you one better. This team is going to suck again next year, guaranteed. There are no intelligent fixes that can rectify our roster for 2013. 2-3 years from now things should be a lot better, if our noble leaders do the right things.
  11. This month of September is going to be something to behold. Four more games on the west coast and after that we play the Yankees, Orioles, Rays and Jays. Wow. We might do well to win 5 or 6 games. The 2012 team was like a house in bad shape, and we were talking about what renovations needed to be done, when somebody slipped into the basement with a gas can and matches and set fire to it. Now we can't do anything but watch it burn to the ground.
  12. What's the over/under on RBI by ex-Red Sox players on the A's?
  13. Bronson Arroyo is in his 7th season for the Reds. He's one of the most durable starters in baseball, averaging about 210 innings per season with Cincy.
  14. Oh yeah, that'd be a re-do. I guess all of this is a sobering lesson in how not to build a team.
  15. 13 RBI for ex-Sox players...and the Coliseum isn't even a good hitter's park.
  16. And then of course there were the exciting starter tryouts for Bard and Aceves. And here we are on August 31 and both of them are totally f***ed up.
  17. So out of the dung heap of pitchers Ben collected in the offseason, one of them contributed, Padilla.
  18. Yes, I think that this trade with the Sox is going to wipe some of the smile off Magic's face.
  19. Let's see how far Tazawa can go. Time to have a look at him as a starter I would think.
  20. Another Sox starter digs a grave for the team in the first few innings.
  21. Sox are 62-70 coming into this game. I would take a rough stab at 10-20 in their last 30 to end up 72-90.
  22. To hell with it, Taz...these games are just advance preseason games for 2013. The Yankees lost to the O's tonight...only 2 games ahead of them now.
  23. Because most people don't expect us to make any big acquisitions this offseason.
  24. 11 million out of 271 million that will be spent (or maybe not spent) over a period of years is a pretty microscopic amount when you discount it to its present value. It's a speck of change that might stay in Henry/Lucchino's pockets anyway. I'd prefer the prospects. Thanks for giving me something to argue about though.
  25. Melancon had a 2.85 ERA in 92 innings in the NL. He has a 6.09 ERA in the AL. If they send this guy back to the NL and he stays there he might be able to have a career.
