    Nathan was making in the area of 10 million a year his last few years with the Twins. He missed all of 2010 and a big chunk of 2011 and at his age there was no guarantee he'd come back to where he was. Texas took a chance and it paid off. Even at that they're paying him 7 million a year. We took a chance with Bailey and it failed dismally in Year 1.

    It is just a tad ironic that we had one of the worst pitching staffs in team history last year and we're going to non-tender Atchison and his 1.58 ERA.

    Here's a funny thought...I've heard a number of people say that we shouldn't sign Anibal Sanchez because he's just not that good. And I don't totally disagree with that. But the funny part is, he would have been the best starter on our 2012 staff. And it's very possible if we signed him that he'd be the best starter on our 2013 staff.

    Those are some pretty big assumptions. Maybe 2013 will be dubbed by the Sox front office as the 'year of the bounceback'.

    I think Papelbon's numbers do tend to support the tags of consistency and reliability. He's had 7 straight years with 30+ saves. 2010 was the only season he had an ERA over 2.94 and a WHIP over 1.15. How many other closers have this kind of 7 year run going?

    Hey let's not forget, Jonny Gomes is the biggest signing of the Cherington era to date.

    I don't quite understand why the winter meetings are still crucial to deals taking place. These guys all have communications technology up the yin-yang now. Is it because they all get roaring piss drunk at the meetings?

    Yeah, that might be interesting. But as for being a New England guy...he lives in LA and has said he'd like to stay where it's nice and warm...and he wishes they all could be California girls.

    There's a discernible trend toward those this offseason. Thin market and teams flush with cash.

    The Reds paid Madson $8.5 million last year to have surgery and recover.

    I find that plausible. I could see Cherington's role as sifting through all the information and putting forth proposals. It makes some sense knowing what we do about Lucchino's involvement, the Valentine hiring, the power struggle with Theo etc.

    Rebound from September/11 that is. On September 6/11 Lester had a 2.93 ERA. Then suddenly, he and the rest of the staff were mysteriously infected with the 'Cantpitchworthashit' virus, that still lingers.

    Come on, it's one bad season we're talking about. Lots of pitchers have bad seasons and rebound. I could cite lots of examples but it would bore the crap out of everyone.

    Lester's ERA throwing to Salty is 4.55.

    The Yankees have made the playoffs every goddam year since 1995, except one. There's gotta be something in that. I hate them too, but I respect that record. And the playoffs, generally speaking, are a crapshoot. The Giants almost got knocked out by both Cincy and St. Louis. They were down 3-1 to St. Louis, with Game 5 on the road, and their hopes pinned on Barry Zito LOL

    In his final 12 starts last year Lester had a 3.76 ERA and threw 79 innings, over 6.5 per start. He's hardly a writeoff.

    Interesting rumor, I'll be checking MLBTR as always but I'm not holding my breath on this one coming to reality.

    I would agree that VMart and his contract are reasonable comps.

    e1, I think you did a good job encapsulating the payroll issues here.

    Full marks for a detailed, reasonable plan.

    If the payroll goes down to 140 this year it means the owners are taking 35-40 million of the money saved on the Dodgers trade and putting it right into their pockets. If that happens and we have a lousy team this year it's not going to be a pretty sight. I think the payroll will be more than that.
