    The Dodgers had Punto lead off last night. For that little stratagem they got what they deserved. Punto went 0 for 4 with 2 K's and they got shut out.

    If Lackey rebounds well from TJ he could be a good value over the next 3 years. We owe him 30.5 million for those 3 years.

    A few things to keep in mind though: The Red Sox don't have any prospective 3-4 hitters in their system. David Ortiz will soon be gone. Acquiring good 3-4 hitter types cheaply is not going to be that easy.

    Good point. It's Mauer's low home run totals that surprise me.

    Mauer is a superior hitter for a catcher, but for a first baseman he'd be more like middle-of the-pack. For a big guy with a great-looking stroke, he has minimal home run power. He's hit a grand total of 20 HR over the last 3 seasons. He's only exceeded 13 HR once in his career.

    I don't think anybody is going to hand out a fully guaranteed $175 million to a player who is battling substance demons every day of his life. I think we might see some creative contract offers.

    If not for the opt-out, A-Rod's 10 year $252 million contract would have run from 2001 to 2010, 2004 to 2010 with the Yankees.

    Hamilton seems like a candidate for a contract with built-in protection in the form of options that vest based on games played or some such thing.

    From 2004 to 2012 Ortiz has had 2 seasons where he played less than 145 games, this one and 2008. I would absolutely bring him back if they can do it on reasonable terms, which are less than what Gasper is suggesting. It all comes to whether there really are any other bidders out there.

    jung, I don't think Lester is going anywhere. This offseason they have to unload Beckett. Then they will have Lackey back, who might be another guy they end up trying to unload.
