  1. Well, it's Cook or Matsuzaka, the O's would be thrilled in either case. We're pitching Buchholz and Lester so at least we have a semi-chance of winning a game.
  2. I think Farrell's candidacy is toast. On top of the Jays' poor record they are now having the infamous 'clubhouse issues' coming to light.
  3. I've been a fan since 1969, when I was 13 years old. Boston was the closest team to Halifax, and still is, and I could pick up the games on the radio. But I think it was Yaz who attracted me to the Sox. After Game 3 of the 2004 ALCS I was convinced I would never see the Red Sox win it all. 2004 and 2007 actually made me feel happy to be a Red Sox fan.
  4. What I don't get is, if Lucchino is the guy pulling the strings, why shouldn't he also be taking heat for the recent fiascos. In addition to his involvement in player decisions, he also has a lot to do with Epstein and Cherington being where they are. If Cherington is just an office boy, then shouldn't Lucchino be more at fault for the sorry state of the 2012 team? If Cherington is an office boy, why would they let him decide to make Daniel Bard a starter?
  5. Right. So all good judgment calls by the Red Sox organization should be credited to Lucchino. All bad ones should be pinned on Epstein or Cherington.
  6. If that's in the article show me where. I quoted directly from the article you're using to support your position.
  7. Even with the salary relief involved, Cherington made it clear to Colletti that he could not make the deal without getting quality prospects in return. The Sox had given up three top prospects to acquire Gonzalez; the idea of a straight salary dump was a nonstarter. Colletti understood. He refused to part with his best pitching prospect, Zach Lee, but De La Rosa and Webster were put in play.
  8. The piece by Edes does not portray Cherington as an office boy. It shows him being involved in a lot of the discussions and also being the guy who insisted on us getting back a package of prospects in the deal.
  9. The big difference from last year is that now there is a ton of money available and moves have to be made. Henry and Lucchino have worked with Cherington for a long time. Frankly if they have as little confidence in as you suggest, they'd be stupid not to replace him. Let's see how it plays out.
  10. Yeah right...Chris Carpenter maybe.
  11. Deal with reality, folks. Cherington is your GM for the next year at least.
  12. It is kind of funny that BC would let it slip like that. The comedy of errors never ends.
  13. The Mariners' record in King Felix starts over the last 3 years is only 50-49. Does that disqualify him or lessen him as an ace in your view?
  14. This ace thing certainly gets a little confusing.
  15. Cliff Lee is 6-8 this year and the Phillies are 12-16 in his starts. So if 700hitter's terms for an ace as cited above are valid, Lee's ace status is f***ed.
  16. I wonder if Tek will be assigned to try to help Daniel Bard. Bard's numbers were consistently outstanding with Tek catching him.
  17. 'Ace' is one of the most poorly defined terms in baseball. Some people seem to be considering only Hall of Fame level performance when they talk about aces.
  18. Another factor in the financial game is that beginning in 2014 a new and substantial penalty for exceeding the lux tax threshold comes into effect. It has something to do with losing a revenue sharing amount that all teams will receive otherwise. That's why the Yankees keep chirping about getting under the threshold for 2014. The Red Sox do have a huge amount of payroll room for 2013-2014. It'll be very interesting to see how they play it. They will be able to add a chunk this offseason and then add another chunk during the season when other teams are looking to dump salaries. I just hope they are up to this.
  19. Orsillo's not bad. I just wish I could get hold of him and say, 'listen, Don, knock off that stupid f***ing 'expected' s***, will you?' It's been a long season...
  20. Don Orsillo drives me nuts sometimes. Why does he have to keep constantly telling us who the 'expected' hitters for the next inning are? He seems to love that word 'expected'. And pointing out the pitch count when it's right on the screen in front of us. That is some irritating s***, Don.
  21. Clay lowered his ERA to 4.24 on August 10. Now it's 4.22. This is going to be one of the few Red Sox teams in history without a single starting pitcher with an ERA under 4. (Minimum of 15 starts.)
  22. I don't think everybody is writing off the Red Sox for 2013 and 2014. But the reality is, they've missed the playoffs 3 straight years in spite of their large financial advantage. Now they have to virtually start from scratch again. And the Orioles and the A's have joined the Yankees, Rays, Rangers and Angels as our competition for spots. Making the playoffs next year is a tall order indeed, IMO. Not impossible but looking like an outside chance at this point.
  23. I whined about the Yankees when they had their spending explosion after 2008 and then won it all. But in the 3 seasons since then, Hal Steinbrenner seems to have really reigned it in and they are making some smart moves without adding much payroll. In 2003-2004 the Red Sox were spending significantly less than the Yankees and being smarter than them. I enjoyed that a lot. But as our spending went up we got much stupider. It's not an irreversible process, and hopefully the Dodgers trade was just the start of being a smart organization again.
  24. Reddick has some horrific slumps. His 2012 averages are now lower than his 2011 averages.
  25. I think it's good. Not sure about Varitek as a manager but I think he might be a great pitching coach.
