  1. Based on what? He was second in MVP voting last year. Whaddya want?
  2. Errors: Red Sox 98 Historically bad White Sox 80 MLB average 70 Unearned runs allowed Red Sox 85 Historically bad White Sox 61 MLB average 49
  3. Fielding % is not a valuable stat on its own, but it's not totally useless. The Red Sox have the most errors in MLB, the worst fielding percentage, and by far the most unearned runs allowed. A lot of fielding misplays do occur on balls hit right at the fielder or on bad throws, right? Those have nothing to do with range. Of course the fact that fielding % doesn't take any range factors into account means that other numbers have to be looked at as well.
  4. My guess would be that making fun of appearances gets a pass unless another poster or posters register a legit objection to it. It's never really been an issue here.
  5. JP Sears could be on the show too.
  6. Including yesterday's completed suspended game, the Sox have held their opponents to less than 4 runs 5 times in the last 38 games.
  7. As you might say, there's a better chance of them signing you and me than signing both Burnes and Fried.
  8. But not immediately before it. They had given us some more flickers of hope by going 4-3 against Baltimore and Houston on the road. Then the road warriors turned back into home patsies.
  9. It's a full-on implosion of the pitching staff. Starters wearing down, having shorter starts, a lot of terrible performances by relievers who have to be pulled, you reach a point that all you can do is grab another warm body and send them to the mound. It ain't pretty to watch, that's for sure.
  10. He seems to have tried to rehab it, and I guess he succeeded with some. I don't spend much mental energy thinking about him, honestly. Hell of a pitcher, hell of a liar. Just not a good guy. Respect to moon for not letting us forget about what he did to that girl.
  11. I'm picturing Sam Kennedy working on new explanations for failure, reassurances about the future, and admonishments to us entitled, whiny fans.
  12. The similarities between (or among) the 2022, 2023 and 2024 Sox seasons are pretty insane. Including the offseasons that preceded them and the trade deadlines. It's like being on a hamster wheel.
  13. "The way things are going, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of Jansen getting hurt before the game and missing his chance at history." - Eeyore.
  14. Well, all we can do is speculate, moon, so we might as well leave it there.
  15. The epic pitching meltdown of '24 marches on.
  16. How exactly was he that much better than Story? Some numbers please!
  17. That's correct. By the time the 6/162 offer came from the Sox, Boras was reportedly already fielding 200 million + offers. Story got 140 million, Bogaerts got 280 million. That obviously makes no sense and was a product of temporary insanity in the market. Bogaerts got a lot more than Snell, Montgomery, Chapman and Bellinger got in total just one year later! Xander would have to be Nostradamus and Edgar Cayce rolled into one to see he had a 280 million payday coming.
  18. The parallels between the Lester *negotiations* and the Bogaerts *negotiations* are embarrassingly similar, and suggest that the CBO's had little to do with them. They have Henry's pawprints all over them.
  19. I think it was reported shortly after Bogaerts signed with San Diego. Not sure by who.
  20. Hey, they picked a lane. Just so happens it was the Tank Lane...
  21. It hasn't really been established as a myth.
  22. I think there's a plausible argument that Bogaerts would have stayed with the Sox for the 6/162 he was finally offered by them, if they went to him around the time Story was signed. The main reason I think this is Story's contract of 6/140. When we signed Story we did some statistical comparisons, and Story was just slightly behind Bogaerts in fWAR per games played. Very close. A 6/162 offer would have represented 15% more than Story got. Also, even though Boras was Bogey's agent, Bogey's previous extension was clearly a team-friendly one. Finally, Bogey seemed to really like playing for the Sox. No one will ever know if the 6/162 would have gotten it done, but at the time that would have been a very legit offer. The contract Bogey got was quite possibly the most bonkers contract ever handed out. It was just pure happenstance, I think. Just look at what happened with the other big Boras clients this past offseason. When it's all said and done, the Sox are probably better off they didn't retain Bogey. Out of the big 3, it was Betts and Devers they really needed to keep.
