1. You're right, he's not. But a really solid closer would be an awfully nice addition to this team. Our bullpen would go from good to exceptional.
2. I'm pretty sure Taz will be given that opportunity. Probably sometime in this series.
3. I agree that Papelbon had a bad season in 2010. But I don't think the characterization of 2009 and 2011 is fair or consistent with how other players are evaluated. The blown save in the 2009 ALDS came on the only runs he's allowed in 27 postseason innings. We got swept in 3 games in 2009 so obviously the whole team has to share the blame. The same with 2011. Papelbon only blew 3 saves that season, meanwhile the team blew a 10 game lead in September. By this reasoning, the Yankees have had issues with Rivera at closer because he blew Game 7 of the 2001 WS and Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS.
4. For better or worse, the ship hasn't sailed quite yet. There's a pretty good chance the Phillies are willing to trade him.
5. We already did that with our offseason signings.
6. Hard to believe they would give Jenks $12 million for 2 years of being a 7-8th inning guy.
7. Not magical, but higher-pressure. It's all debatable, needless to say. But I think there is actually is a body of evidence that some pitchers and some players have trouble performing for the Red Sox and the Yankees and do much better in other places. I think Melancon is an obvious example of this syndrome. With him it seems to be framed as 'anxiety issues'. Well, I think these anxiety issues probably affect a lot of players.
8. I think Bailey makes the case that it's not an easy job to be the Red Sox closer. He had great numbers with Oakland and he got off to a good start this year. But now look at him. He's toast. It's a tough job. The choke factor is underrated.
9. Sounds guilty as sin.
10. Tazawa is the obvious choice. Uehara may have pitched a little better than Tazawa, but Tazawa should be more durable.
11. But Melancon and Aceves have had success pitching in other situations. They're not bums. But they couldn't handle being the Sox closer, for whatever reason. And Bard turned down the job, which was a catastrophic decision.
12. Who could forget Heathcliff? And Duquette traded him for Varitek and Lowe. Still unbelievable after all these years. Urbina was fun too.
13. Some people say our closer position should be easy to fill. But Bailey is the 4th guy to bomb out in the last 1.5 seasons. Aceves, Melancon, Hanrahan and Bailey. Granted Hanrahan got injured or maybe was injured, but he didn't look good at any point.
14. Bailey gets sent to the low-leverage zone.
15. Bailey now in epic failure mode.
16. I have to say you're right, some of his numbers and the recent blown saves are taking some of the lustre off the Paps reunion campaign.
17. I hate the way they do those stats though. They count 'blown holds' the same as 'blown saves' but they don't add saves and holds together. For example they show Tazawa as having 3 blown saves, but 2 of those were really blown holds where he came into the game in the 7th. It was a 'save opportunity', but only if he had pitched the 7th, 8th and 9th. Look into it and you'll see what I mean.
18. 'Numerous internal options' is overstating it a bit. We could put Alex Wilson at closer but I don't think anybody really wants that. I don't think anybody really wants Andrew Miller there either. So there's Tazawa and Uehara, but Uehara can't be overtaxed. So it's Tazawa, or a tag-team of Tazawa and Uehara.
19. C'mon MVP, if we're going to do this, then Rivera blew two of the biggest games of his career too, probably costing the Yankees two more titles (2001 and 2004).
20. I agree that we have several good arms at the back-end. But nobody has really stepped up as closer yet. Bailey may yet do it, but his recent performances are not reassuring. I think there's a choke factor involved in being closer of the Red Sox. There's a lot of pressure on that position.
21. I'm not freaking about the Jays, they're just one more team we have to contend with and we have to look after our own business and all that. But the fact is they're now back in the picture and they do have guys pitching well and guys hitting well all of a sudden. It's just the way baseball is.
22. In his last 4 save opportunities Bailey has 1 good save, 1 heart-attack save and 2 blown saves. In his last 11 one-inning appearances he has no clean innings, and has given up 12 hits and 6 walks. He really has to get it together.
23. Sorry, but this doesn't put it to bed. For one thing we could trade them Bailey for Papelbon. For another, GM's have been known to say one thing and do another. People wouldn't keep yammering about Papelbon if we had one f***ing guy who would step up and do the job as closer. Hasn't happened yet.
24.
Predictions of their demise may have been premature.
I agree.
25. Fred is harsh, shall we say. Fred also had extreme doubts that Buchholz would ever become a good starter because he thought he was a 'Nervous Nelly'.
