    The option has certainly vested. But it remains a team option that presumably can't be exercised until after the season. If they could exercise it early they probably would. What makes it unusual of course is that it's an option for a dramatically lower salary. But for AAV calcs it retains the same qualities as other team options. For example, the 2014 team option on Lester was not factored into his AAV for 2013 and prior years.

    What's hard to define is that this team had that certain magic ability to WIN GAMES. They played hard for 9 innings just about every time out, they were resilient, and they had different guys stepping up at different times to deliver the timely hits or the crucial outs.

    Here's my take. (Not necessarily in order) 1) Farrell, Nieves and the rest of the new coaches. 2) The perfect additions - Napoli, Victorino, Drew, Gomes, Ross, Uehara. 3) The resurgence of Lester and Lackey. 4) David Ortiz still a monster. 5) Good fortune with injuries.

    That $16 million figure I quoted includes the 'general expenditures' - most of that is pension benefits. As I understand it the Lackey clause has no effect on AAV until they actually exercise the option - it's not guaranteed yet.

    Here's a start on the 2014 payroll figures. These are the 12 guaranteed deals, assuming they exercise Lester's option. The luxury tax limit is $189 million. But keep in mind that about $16 million of that is chewed up by pension benefits and the amount being paid to the Dodgers over 3 years. So we're already down to about $53 million of room.     I've been looking at the 2014 payroll projections and I'm 110% convinced that Ellsbury is long, long gone. I'll put the projections up soon.

    It is kind of surreal. I thought at some point we were going to be rudely awakened from our dream but it didn't happen. It almost feels like there must be one more series still to play.

    I agree on Dempster but not Peavy. Trading both of them is too much of an instant reduction in rotation depth. Peavy should be at least a solid #3, we've only got him for one year and it's not an outlandish amount. Plus he should be motivated in his walk year.

    This 2013 team was unique. We've never seen a Sox team overachieve like this. Winning it all feels surreal to me. It will take a while to sink in.

    It seems pretty clear he was very hurt in 2011.

    None of that is really surprising. When you look at the numbers by playoff series for a player who's been in the postseason a lot, you see some hilarious bouncing up and down. Much like you would if you broke the regular season up into 5 game chunks.

    Well, watching some of those first 3 games will remind you how s*****, angry, frustrated and depressed you were before the miracle unfolded. It's a reminder of what we overcame and how far we've come since that Game 3 debacle.

    Don't forget is right. He was horrible against righties this year - an OBP of .244. Yikes. My personal preference for next year, unlikely though it may be, would be Bogaerts at third, Drew at short, and Middlebrooks traded.

    Victorino was 3 for 24 in the ALCS but had 4 RBI in the clinching Game 6. Victorino was 2 for 13 in the WS but had 4 RBI in the clinching Game 6.

    The Red Sox have had a lot of good fortune with injuries and also with performance levels this year, I think.

    The only stiff on the list is Hellickson, and Maddon yanked him out of there after a couple of innings for Moore!
