    I thought the Yankees did a terrible job with their bullpen in the offseason and it's starting to show. The only defence for replacing Logan with the washed-up Thornton is that they saved a few bucks. And for the Yankees that's no defence at all. Thornton throws 94-96 but his command is awful.

    First game of the Subway Series was a doozy indeed.

    Matt Thornton is looking more and more like the curious signing I thought he was. His WHIP is 1.67 now. It was 1.76 with the Sox last year.

    Buchholz is one of the big differences from 2013, no question. But how about this: we're averaging 4.03 runs per game, compared to 5.27 last year. 1.24 runs a game less. 4.03 runs a game! That's third worst in the league. We're being outscored by Seattle so far.

    If you evaluate him as a cheap, serviceable back-end pitcher though, he's not that bad.

    I don't know if the 'catalyst' idea about Ellsbury really holds up. If you look at the Yankees offence this year, it has only had a tiny improvement over last year's slapdash squad. Obviously this isn't Ellsbury's fault, since his numbers are pretty good. But I think the 'catalyst' idea might be just that, an idea.

    I like your thinking as usual. Bogaerts has been a nightmare with men on base so far, but I think the turnaround will come soon. He needs that one big hit to get some confidence.

    AL East Pigpile Update: "The Blue Jays, while falling to last place in the division, now have the best run differential at nil." "The first-place Yankees, meanwhile, have the worst differential at a putrid -16. However, our friend Jacksonianmarch has pointed out that Joe Girardi manages to 'outperform the Pythag' by doing such things as allowing blowout losses to get even worse with his bullpen moves."

    It happens to all teams though. Pretty sure it happened to us a few times last year.

    That was odd. You don't usually see a hitter obviously trying to bunt on 4 straight pitches unless it's a pitcher.

    Jeter's SLG is .283. Only 3 EBH so far, all doubles. That's grim.

    Looking at the game play-by-play, the Yankees had 7 total baserunners in the 11th, 12th and 13th innings and couldn't score. Most of that was against Heath Bell. Baseball is a crazy game.

    The AL East is a pigpile so far. Baltimore has the best run differential, at a cool -1.
