You too? I know some people are sick of me talking about Nava. Let me try to approach this a little differently. It's my understanding that the Red Sox, under the philosophy of Bill James and Moneyball and all that stuff, place a high value on OBP. Nava was 2nd on the team in that stat in 2013, and 3rd in 2014. I would think they would be reluctant to dish off one of their top OBP guys, especially one who makes jacksquat, especially in light of the offensive struggles last year and the 'new emphasis on offense' and the various health and inexperience issues surrounding our 2015 outfield.

I think the main purpose of the right/left thing is to prevent the other team from being able to have a lefty reliever face two lefty hitters in a row. That can be big late in the game.

Absolutely, his price tag, which is projected at $1.9 million this year, is a big part of the equation. They can't be spending big bucks at every position. You need some cheaper pieces.

Wild card #1 is Victorino. This guy could get traded, or he could have a 5-6 WAR season, or he could tweak something early and say bye-bye until 2016.

As I said, I'm not a stats expert, so I don't know if a sample size of 13 years is large enough to identify an aberration. The word aberration is being tossed around here without too much concern for its actual technical meaning. I'm not even sure why it even matters that we determine whether 2012-2014 or 2013 are 'the aberration'. All that aside, so as not to duck your question, in my opinion, yes, the two division titles and the two last place finishes would meet the very informal definition of aberration I think is being used here.

I'm not a statistics expert, but I know enough to know that you need a bigger sample than 3 to identify an aberration.

I'm predicting that Nava will get plenty of AB's this year. I'm assuming we trade Cespedes. That leaves us with an OF configuration like this: LF Ramirez CF Castillo RF Betts ? Victorino ? Nava How the pieces fit will be interesting. But there are a pile of question marks with inexperience (Castillo, Betts) and health (Ramirez, Victorino).
