  1. Papi-Panda home run celebrations should be something.
  2. Well, it's good to see we're getting this one out of the way early.
  3. I've had some very good times at Fenway. My first visit was in 1974. My best visit was in 1986. I saw 6 games against the O's and the Yankees in beautiful summer weather with 4 thirsty buddies. It was as good as it gets. The thing I always loved about Fenway was there would almost always be somebody sitting close to you with a perfect Boston accent who was more than willing to talk Sox with you.
  4. I think the Sox FO is concerned about how well Hamels will fit in Boston and that's why they're reluctant to pay too much in prospects.
  5. Sox fans should be expecting the unexpected by now. We've had 4 straight seasons of surprising or shocking final results. 2011 - 5-10 wins worse than expected 2012 - 15-20 wins worse than expected 2013 - 10-15 wins better than expected 2014 - 15-20 wins worse than expected Hopefully the law of averages is on our side this year.
  6. Agreed about Martinez. 57% of Thomas's AB's were as a DH.
  7. Frank Thomas's election helps him.
  8. It's sort of interesting that Shank ties this in with Larry getting old and falling off his motorbike rather than anything to do with his track record.
  9. Last year was a very good year for getting elite pitchers at the deadline for a reasonable cost (Lester & Price).
  10. 'Hall of Fame' is not exactly clear-cut terminology. The only reason that term was chosen is because it sounds good. So why shouldn't it be the Hall of the Very Good? Whether we like it or not, that's exactly what it is. There are a number of guys in the Hall already who were only very good.
  11. Quite true. Message board fodder, that's all.
  12. And now, sir, you've done it. These comparisons of great players are often fundamentally absurd, but we are compelled to do them anyway for some reason. Orr was a defenseman and Gretzky was a center. What about goalies? Maybe Marty Brodeur deserves consideration as the best hockey player. How come the lists of great football players don't include any defenders (kudos to the mention here of Lawrence Taylor)? How do we compare Bill Russell with Michael Jordan? Etc.
  13. Sounds like your analysis of him came up with much different results from the Sox brain trust's.
  14. He'll be the X Factor.
  15. I think it's pretty plausible that a position switch can affect a player's hitting. It's just very hard to measure some of this stuff. sk7326 just commented a few days ago about Lavarnway's hitting suffering when he tried to concentrate more on his defense.
  16. USC, Bills.
  17. And don't get mad at me if I sometimes misinterpret what you meant in one of your posts. Internet posts are a very imperfect form of communication.
  18. I hate to admit it, but my favorite football player at one time was a running back who is now better known as a murderer.
  19. But what if the new Fenway looked almost exactly like the old Fenway? The Yankees did it. Their new stadium looks like the old one except for the porch being even a little closer and all the empty $2,500 seats behind home plate.
  20. It has to retain a lot of the features of the old Fenway, including the Monster, naturally. Like the Yankees did it.
  21. It's all good now, because Fred posted this on the Offseason thread: Well that means I can't bitch and moan now that I've made that prediction. I wanted to be the first one to do it but just couldn't bring myself to do it, so my pal Elk set the tone. And if they go South, I've changed my mind.....I won't bitch and moan........just tell everyone how disappointed I am. Then we'll all be. Now get over your shock. Carved in stone.
  22. He's right though. The 'I told you so' wars on message boards are the worst.
  23. AKA the Rocket. I've only seen him on tape. He was an awesome skater and goal-scorer. But I would submit that he was one-dimensional in that his sole talent was scoring. Much the same as Bobby Hull, who was my hockey idol before he turned out to be such an ******* (jumping leagues and beating up his wife). Another guy who deserves mention is Mario Lemieux. In one of the international hockey series Lemieux played on a line with Gretzky. They put on an incredible show.
  24. Gretzky was a scoring machine, no doubt about it. Orr gets the nod from most people because he was the greater all-around player. He was dominant at both ends of the rink. Orr led the NHL in points scored twice as a defenceman.
