    Napoli is an underrated offensive player. His career OPS of .850 is #22 among active players.

    In a matter of this importance, why do so many people assume that Lucchino got to make the final call on that initial offer to Lester? If you believe that you believe he's running the team and that Henry wouldn't overrule him. Henry had to be on board with it.

    If I may interject here, the 'exit stage right' was referring to a pitcher's prime. At 31 a pitcher is leaving his physical prime, as a general rule. That doesn't mean he can't have a number of good years after that, but the risk of decline keeps increasing. Some guys, like Shields and Lee, have proven to have exceptional longevity.

    Actually they spent $63 mil on Moncada.

    But they did reportedly make an offer for Hamels which didn't include that much in the way of top prospects-I think Kelly was in there?

    It's the combination of risk factors: -Size of contract - assuming it's true he wants the option year guaranteed it's $110 million. -Value of prospect(s) surrendered - assuming the Phillies insist on Swihart or Betts. -Age. -Fit/numbers vs. AL. 29 games, slash line of 279/325/488 - 812 OPS. If you could downgrade one of those risks by removing Swihart & Betts from the equation it would make the deal much more palatable.

    MLBTR has some chatter about the Sox being interested in Lee and the Phillies being interested in Victorino.

    Are the guidelines such that any team that signs a guy like Moncada for $30 million will get whacked with a penalty like the Sox did?

    Carl Crawford and BJ Upton - 2 guys that looked like princes in Tampa Bay and turned to pumpkins when they got paid. It's a funny old game.

    It's been a revolving door, but hardly a disaster. They did win 3 titles with the guys after Nomar.

    I think the organization has to own the W-L records no matter what the reasons. It works the other way too, that is, they deserve full credit for the good years. I too get irritated when someone attributes 2013 to luck. As with the game of baseball itself, the luck part generally evens out. This ownership has been in place 13 seasons, and 3 championships has been a sensational achievement.

    I'm not complaining about our FO at all. They have made me a happy Sox fan. However, we also can't overlook the fact that the team has missed the playoffs 4 of the last 5 years, and turned in 2 of the worst W-L records since the dark days. There are reasons to question whether we've been trending in the right direction.

    One of the reasons 2015 will be so interesting, to me, is that Ben and the FO have done some against-the-grain things and really put themselves out there, so to speak. They cut loose Lackey and Lester and assembled a rotation with some very suspect historical numbers. They spent big on adding offense and went well over the tax threshold even with a cut-rate rotation. Very interesting indeed.

    No, certainly not. All I really care about is how analytics help the Red Sox. There have been various forms of advanced analytics in play for quite a while now. I'd like to see some evidence of how we have translated analytics into on-field success, or how other teams have.

    One point on which I agree with 700hitter is that the most important metric by far is your W-L record.

    If they didn't know about that, it would truly be a reason for concern.
