    The only thing I would argue is that Ben should get a total pass for 2012. He took over a team that needed to be blown up and he was given no money for moves. Then Lucchino hired Valentine. Cherington's reign as GM began in 2013 IMO. Finishing last two years in a row would be pretty bad with this level of payroll.

    Red Sox fans are entitled, no doubt. But they're not quite as spoiled these days as they were during the golden Epstein-Francona years, when the team was expected to post 95 wins every year and generally did.

    I'm afraid there are solid reasons for doubt, Kimmi. On paper, we took a 71-91 team, we added Hanley and Panda, but we subtracted Lester and Lackey. It's conceivable that Papi, Napoli and Pedroia are all in decline phases. Victorino is a no-show. Betts has been decent, but short of expectations. Panda and Nava are automatic outs against lefties. Now I guess we have to hope Castillo can bring something.

    Kimmi, your attitude is terrific. But if you were to put on your objective stat-guru hat when you look at us, to forget for a moment we're your team, you'd have to concede we flat out stink.

    How about this for enigmas - the Rays might win this division with a $50 million payroll, with no Moore, no Cobb, and now Smyly out for the season.

    We now have a run differential of -42 in 42 games, so we're on pace for a differential of -162. Our Pythagorean record is 17-25.

    Pedroia is only making about half what the highest paid players do. Which isn't to say he isn't part of the problem with the offense. He's been awful with RISP.

    There's no way to candy-coat it, it's a shambles. They're averaging 2.3 runs a game in May. The 'outfield overload' situation now appears to be nothing more than management confusion and dysfunction. You've got Castillo in AAA, and last night Victorino excuses himself from play with a sore calf or something, putting Nava in the game. Meanwhile Bradley is with the team for no apparent reason. Crazy.

    The offense is due to start scoring a lot of runs. But you can't count 'em till they're on the board. Tonight we face another lefty and they have held us to a .199 average, which is ridiculous for a team that's predominantly righty.

    If the team doesn't improve, Kimmi, I can't see any way around it. It'd be the second year in a row with a losing record and one of the highest payrolls in the game. It has to fall on the GM. Hopefully they do improve and the issue becomes academic. That's what we all want to see.

    Kelly *might* still be able to salvage that deal for Ben. And I'm not being a Ben Pollyanna, in fact I'm not feeling all that good about Ben right now. There is much to question in the way this team has been constructed. He really needs his players to get it going over the next few weeks when we should be able to win a high %.

    The Noffense is leaving me speechless. Every single hitter on the team except Brock Holt is below their career OPS-some, needless to say, are light years below it.

    This implies that pitching coaches have very little input about mechanics because the pitchers have all that under control. So what, the pitchers go off all on their own analyzing tapes of their deliveries and make any necessary changes? It doesn't make sense to me.

    LOL that is a funny line about Martin. Billy was a lunatic though...unfortunately his death was the ultimate comment on his lifestyle. Once again I don't think any of us really know jack about whether a pitching coach can make a difference or not. I think if a pitching coach can make one or two useful suggestions to the pitchers about their mechanics he's probably earned his pay that year.

    Someway, somehow, score some runs. Like even in the first inning or two would be nice.

    But if Ellsbury is such an offensive catalyst, why did the Yankees score fewer runs last year than the year before? And why are they in such an offensive drought right now? You can look at our numbers across the board and see why we're scoring so few runs. Just too many guys not producing. And the hitting with RISP has been atrocious.

    Yes, it'd be nice if we could score a few runs. 38 runs in the last 15 games.
