  1. But Henry knew Dombrowski's approach when he hired him, and obviously it was what he wanted.
  2. I think he's taking the approach Henry wanted him to.
  3. For better or worse, this team is anxious to get off to a good start, to put it mildly.
  4. When you evaluate the long term health of the franchise part, I think you also have to factor in the long term contracts on the books.
  5. Oh sure. I'm just getting kind of a bad vibe, and frankly I think it's mostly because of Farrell and his shaky status.
  6. Oh, that part is simple. But the question is how do baseball salaries keep going up and up into the stratosphere when the American economy in general has been flat for years.
  7. I know spring training games don't mean much, but this year seems to have been especially dreary for Sox fans. Not much to cheer about.
  8. Holt and Young are the platoon. Castillo is in limbo.
  9. Farrell is a goner.
  10. I think the relationship between the increases is more of a back and forth than you're suggesting. Many businesses bump their prices because they see their expenses going up and they hope the customers won't revolt. The real question, though, is how baseball revenue and expenses can continue to increase at a rate far in excess of the growth of the economy in general. It suggests an irrational market. And that's what it has become for the average citizen - a very irrational economic decision to take your family to a game.
  11. Pro sports has reached the point where for the average citizen the ticket and concession prices are another form of 'idiot tax' like legal gambling. If you're stupid enough to throw away that much money it's on you. If you're rich, of course, it's no big deal.
  12. The Sox are a business and perfectly entitled to make money, that's for sure. If going to a game at Fenway is too expensive for a middle-class family that's kind of sad. Players salaries have spiraled into never-never land and its the fans who have to foot the bill somehow.
  13. We'd sort of be taken out behind the woodshed on that deal, don't you think?
  14. The Red Sox have already demonstrated that they're willing to play Shaw over Panda. There's simply no reason to be concerned about Sam Travis's progress being blocked. Especially when he hasn't even played AAA ball yet.
  15. I never said anything about exonerating Ben for those contracts. Once again you read things that aren't there at all.
  16. For the reasons UserName cited, (Sam) Travis is not blocked.
  17. I have to say, of all the jokes about Pablo's weight, this one did make me laugh.
  18. Baseball is one sport where some indisputably fat guys have had very successful careers. But Pablo is in grave danger of crossing the line from fat to uselessly obese.
  19. The fact that Pablo got hurt on an ordinary baseball play doesn't mean much. Guys in great shape get hurt on ordinary plays all the time. According to Bradford, Pablo will be participating in all drills today and plans to play Tuesday. Whether the team has the same plan is another story. But this may not be decided just yet.
  20. Yeesh, that's exactly why I talked about him replacing Ortiz at DH. Clear communication on the internet is f***ing hopeless sometimes.
  21. But Spud, Pablo has hit better than Ortiz this spring. Should Pablo replace Ortiz as DH? No. Because we know David's history and that he doesn't give a crap about spring games. It's never quite as simple as saying 'whoever's doing better right now plays!'
  22. I agree - our bullpen is much stronger on paper than our rotation, so we have to give Kelly another shot as a starter.
  23. It's not a bad idea, but for now he's being treated as a starter and he's been our best one this spring.
  24. It'll be interesting to see the reaction if Shaw goes into a little slump and those volatile small sample numbers take a dip.
