  1. I don't disagree with any of that. What I'm mainly saying is that at first glance the numbers look like crap. I think what it shows is that sometimes you really have to dig a little deeper into the numbers. We had an outstanding bullpen that year as well.
  2. Our pitching stats for 2007 have always fascinated me. If all you did was look at the stats for the starting rotation and someone told you we led the league in ERA and won the World Series, you'd swear it was ********. Because aside from Beckett the numbers range from mediocre to horrible.
  3. I think even georom would have little to complain about.
  4. The Cubs starting rotation is putting up amazing numbers thus far. All 5 have made all their starts. The highest ERA is 2.90. 4 of the 5 have a WHIP under 1. The bullpen has nice numbers too.
  5. Also, it's not meaningful to say that the best hitters fail 7 times out of 10. The best hitters in history have actually only failed 6 times out of 10, if you consider getting on base a success, which you should. Furthermore, the odds are stacked to a ridiculous degree against the hitter. He not only has to beat the pitcher but 8 fielders. That is a lopsided contest.
  6. Here's the GameDay capture of Bradley's AB. 2 strike calls that were indisputable balls. That's a 50% error rate on one AB.
  7. They're a couple of incorrigible jokers, Kimmi. Just ignore it. It's not directed at you personally anyway, it's directed at the opposing side of the debate in general.
  8. Priceless! (Definitely no pun intended.)
  9. This is starting to feel like a political issue. Everybody should respect everybody else's opinion on it.
  10. I wasn't awake to see it, but based on what I've read, Bradley's AB in the 9th last night was a good argument for the automated strike zone.
  11. Well, everybody's got their ideas of what a sport is, so there has to be some sort of objective reference point. I would point out that a golfer has been SI's Sportsman of the Year 6 times since the award began in 1954. And the only golfer to win the award twice was not white. And continuing with that theme, check out the LPGA events sometime...the majority of the best players are not white.
  12. If we're going to include beach volleyball we also have to include the Lingerie Football League.
  13. The good news is that the two spectacular months were only a few months apart.
  14. His BB/9 has been excellent all year. In his last 4 starts he's only given up 3 walks.
  15. Over his last 20 games, going back to when he came off the DL last year, he has pitched 133 innings - 6.65 per start - with a 3.65 ERA.
  16. Porcello does have some career-best numbers this year (WHIP & K/BB). He has an ERA+ of 109. I'm not his biggest fan either but at least there are some positive things in his numbers.
  17. True, but it may be more about how the ballpark fits his game.
  18. Shields has a career ERA of 5.42 at Fenway in 13 starts with an .808 OPS against.
  19. OTOH the most innings Kelly has pitched in an MLB season is 134.1. I think that may be his ceiling. Buchholz has at least reached 170 innings 3 times...
  20. I think Kelly may actually be in a league of his own.
  21. fred would have moved on from Bogaerts with a 'Glad to be proven wrong on that one'. But he would be railing away about a bunch of other things, like the starting pitching and Hanley's hitting.
  22. I have always found this to be one of the more humorous famous sayings. It sounds like he might have said it when he was plastered.
  23. It's a delicate balance though, isn't it? You want the player to think you have confidence in them, but if they blow a certain number of chances the axe has to fall, like it did with Buchholz.
