I think the Quality Start stat still has validity. It's true that overall run scoring has gone down. But on the other hand innings pitched by starters also keep going down as it becomes more and more of a bullpen game. If the starter goes 6 innings and gives up 3 earned runs or less he is giving you a reasonable chance to win.
You could tinker with it of course but what's the point. We already have the 'High Quality Start' which is 7 IP and 2 ER or less. And now we have the Bill James 'Game Score' as well.
In that last start Buchholz gave up 3 ER in 6 IP so he gets a bare minimum Quality Start. But he gave up 9 baserunners for a 1.5 WHIP, which is right on his overall WHIP for the year. So it wasn't a good start, no. He has to do better and soon.
Remy had a good day yesterday. First he was all over Uribe for not at least attempting the inning-ending double play - a mistake that led to 5 more Sox runs. Then he called for the grand slam by Mookie.
Yeah, it was one of those 'one bad pitch' outings. Seems like the third or fourth game in a row Buch has given up a crooked number early and then pitched well after that. He might be about to go on one of his good runs, but it better start soon.
Trading for Trout would be like trading for Jessica Alba but having your balls cut off in the process. (Just a little Talksox humor for a Friday afternoon.)
