  1. The 'furor' over missed calls is nothing new. Do the names Larry Barnett and Don Denkinger ring a bell? Barnett is the guy who made the infamous no-call on Cincy's Ed Armbrister in the 1975 Series. Denkinger may have cost St. Louis the 1985 Series.
  2. Nomar is dead to me.
  3. Closers have to stay on the field too. Don't underestimate the ability of these guys to get injured no matter whether they're starting, closing or sleeping.
  4. Wins rarely bug me. Against Baltimore I'll take them any which way.
  5. 393 feet officially. Not a real moon shot. His previous home run on May 10 went 460 feet.
  6. BTW Max, I did see the Sox benefit from a few generous balls & strikes calls last night. GameDay shows that Pedroia should have struck out in the 6th instead of walking. Didn't affect the outcome but it could have.
  7. The fact is that, whether we like it or not, technology has become an integral part of the game in every aspect (did you see Papi and Chili studying the Baltimore reliever on the Ipad last night?). There is no good reason for the officials not being as up to date technologically as the players and managers are.
  8. You're right. In 2015 almost exactly half of the calls that were reviewed were overturned. Personally I don't mind the interruptions for the sake of fixing that many calls. To each their own.
  9. So you don't like the fact that incorrect calls are being rectified.
  10. The other side of the coin is that we already have a new system where umps' missed calls are being corrected on a regular basis, and it doesn't seem to be hurting anything.
  11. Everyone who is advocating automated balls & strikes is well aware of the fact that it would cost us calls as well. We all know Vazquez is a good 'pitch-framer'. I think you're quite wrong about what the intent is.
  12. If the 13% error rate is accurate, there are about 3 dozen blown calls per game.
  13. I've made up my mind. I fully support an automated strike zone. Screwups like the JBJ at-bat with 2 blatantly wrong calls out of 4 are totally unacceptable.
  14. The only question is how he's doing with the pitching staff. Hard to say.
  15. Extending the replay reviews to balls and strikes is probably the most we'll see in the next decade. There is a lot of resistance to robots.
  16. I was at Fenway in 1975 with a friend who was a big Yankee fan. We were there before a game with the Yankees and Catfish Hunter walked over close to where we were. My friend asked if he could take his picture. Catfish smiled and said 'Sure, I just hope I don't crack your camera' or something like that.' He was cool.
  17. I can't even talk about Buchholz any more. He's Bastard 1 to me now. I just can't believe we decided he needed a baby brother.
  18. But in the JBJ at-bat that I posted the GameDay screen freeze of, there were two pitches clearly well outside the strike zone that were both called strikes. Not borderline at all. Those are the ones that are really aggravating.
  19. No more central than safe-out calls, which are now subject to review.
  20. Porcello's 2016 numbers are those of a #3 starter at worst. A #3 starter is by definition an average starter. Porcello has an ERA+ of 116, so it's 16% better than league average when taking Park Factor into account.
  21. Jays may end up being more of a problem than O's.
  22. Don't close to your mind to the possibility of pleasant surprises.
  23. Pointlessly pessimistic prognostication.
  24. If he continues to slump he'll be moved down. Management has more patience than the fans. That's usually a good thing.
  25. Farrell likes the L-R-L thing with Papi-Hanley-JBJ.
