Owens only started that game because Pomeranz couldn't go. You really think it's Farrell's fault that Pomeranz couldn't go or that Owens was our #6 starter?

No, the real mistake was winning the division. We would have been better off following the Jays example and being in the Wild Card game. They outfoxed us.

I realize that. But Tito left him in too long. He left him in to face the red-hot Matsui in the 7th with 2 runners on base, the Sox losing 4-2 and Pedro over 100 pitches. Matsui hit a bullet that Trot Nixon made a running catch on. On Pedro's 111th pitch of the game. It was another example of how fortune was on our side in 2004.

You're in denial if you think Papi's postseason heroics weren't the key to our parades. 'Good pitching beats good hitting' - yeah, sometimes, but guess what, not all the time. The teams we faced in the World Series had pretty good pitching, but Papi destroyed them.

Just for fun we should all have a go at figuring out the payroll for the next few years. For example, let's say the payroll budget is 200 million, and let's say half goes to the pitching staff and half to position players. It's pretty obvious they can only do 2 out of 3 on the B's you mentioned, at best...

That implies that in any one decision, it really doesn't matter much what the manager does. He could take out a pitcher tossing a no-hitter and bring in his worst reliever and it wouldn't matter that much.

I can't help but have my doubts about the ability of Price and Porcello to step up in playoff games. They have no postseason pedigree. Lester and Lackey do. I can't explain it but the history is there. Price in particular - how many postseason chances can he blow?
