    moonslav has made a great point on this - the numbers suggest that Jason Varitek did not really become a strong defensive catcher until he was about 30. Swihart has time.

    I'd be very surprised if they trade one of them. They're not bringing Hanigan back, so we're down to Leon and Vazquez, with Swihart working on his defense in Pawtucket.

    Just for funsies I'm going to disagree. I don't think anyone will get 400 million. 400 million would be a 23% increase over the current record holder, Stanton, whose deal is off to a very shaky start.

    My personal belief is that you can't compare Russell and Jordan with each other. It's like comparing hitters and pitchers in baseball. Apples and oranges.

    Harper has actually had 2 bad seasons out of the last 3. I just don't understand how the money can keep growing. At the end of the day it's the average fan paying the bills, and the average fan doesn't just keep getting richer. Something doesn't compute.

    As moonslav indicated, we basically have him for the next 4 years for about 50 million total, so a 10 year 300 million deal would in effect be an extension of 6 years at about 42 million a year. Plus we assume all the risk of him getting injured (and he just had knee surgery). If terms like that are the best we can do, it's just not feasible. You have to wonder, too, at what point the MLB rate of inflation starts to slow down a bit.

    If they really want EE, Morales, or Beltran, they won't lose out.

    Yeah, but Braun really crossed the line. In sleazeball behavior he's maybe one notch below A-Rod, if that.

    I don't get the point of throwing out trade proposals you don't like that much yourself.

    I'm thinking maybe 8 years/180 million.

    Even setting aside his achievements with the Red Sox, what Theo Epstein just did with the Cubs franchise is awe-inspiring. In 5 years he delivered a World Series champion and a team that is well set up to take a run at more titles over the next few years. And he almost made it look easy.

    Why would you want to give up 5 young players, including 3 starting pitchers and a catcher, for a well-paid DH and a setup guy? I think I'd rather sign EE than do this.

    Those numbers are too much, I certainly agree.

    It's good enough for me. I'm an analytical person, but some things don't need to be analyzed that much.

    You're right, the recency effect can be powerful. But breaking 2 droughts totaling almost 2 centuries is an achievement for which you can't find anything remotely comparable.

    Or does this suggest that MLB teams value defense more than offense at the position? The Sox certainly seemed in a hurry to demote Swihart and then move him to the outfield.

    OK - do you have a better comp for Swihart than harmony's Salty comp?

    I really don't know about the Salty after 2009 thing...nor do I think it matters that much. 2017 is the year for Swihart to show what he's got.

    With Ortiz gone, Mookie is the franchise. They really need to lock him up before he's a free man.
