  1. In this case, the exceptions are vast.
  2. A 2 WAR DH is harder to find than a 2 WAR position player, though, because they only get half credit.
  3. That's exactly why I was nonplussed about it. If they planned to compete in 2015, why not keep Lackey.
  4. There are statistics and there are personal observations and logic. Personal observations and logic tell me that HFA is a slight advantage in the postseason, but that when it comes to games against teams that you're evenly matched with or better than you, it means nothing. I watched the Sox lose Game 7 of the 75 Series at home, the 78 playoff game at home. In 86 we won the first 2 at Shea and then blew it by losing 2 of 3 at Fenway. In 99 we won Game 5 in Cleveland. In 03 we won Game 5 in Oakland. In 03 we lost 2 of 3 to the Yanks at Fenway. In 04 we won the last 2 in NY. In 07 we won the crucial Game 5 in Cleveland. Where was the HFA in all these critical games? It was nowhere to be seen. This year Cleveland just kicked our butts.
  5. We've got some real, current results right in front of us. 6 teams have been eliminated so far. 3 of them had HFA and 3 didn't.
  6. They probably gave up on Melancon too quickly, but I really don't think he 'did fine' here.
  7. It was the patches on the jerseys for sure, Slash. There was goddam kryptonite in those f***ers. I think you've nailed it.
  8. If you believe in WAR, losing Papi just cost us 5 wins and knocked us back to an 88 win team. I think that's about right. I think we do need another bat and making a play for EE is realistic. If his price tag is ridiculous they probably will go after Beltran. They wanted him at the trade deadline so there's obviously interest.
  9. You have to like Dave Roberts. Using Jensen and Kershaw to get the last 9 outs, I don't think many managers would have gone there. He was like, to hell with tomorrow, I am winning this f***ing game no matter what.
  10. Funny stuff YOTN.
  11. So how do you explain them winning 11 in a row and winning the division comfortably, which truthfully very few of us expected going into September? Were they distracted then or not distracted then? Why did the distraction only kick in after that? Slash, if they had played well against Cleveland and won, the narrative would be about how excited the team was about trying to win another ring for Papi and what a great motivator that was.
  12. Oh, I know Kelly had 4 years. But all that really means is that his average cost wasn't too high. We've had him for 2.3 years and his net value has been nil. He's set us back more than helped us. I don't usually have an instant negative feeling about trades but this one felt weird to me right away.
  13. It was a funky deal IMO. Instead of getting back prospects we got 2 'big-league ready' players, but both who had big question marks over their heads, especially health-wise. I can't remember another one quite like it.
  14. Did you think Kelly would be better (have a higher WAR) than Lackey in 2015?
  15. Some people like to keep things simple for themselves. If they can chalk up this loss to one thing, like "Farrell blowing HFA", it saves them from having to think about it too much. It's also the whole principle of scapegoating.
  16. Ah s***, it started as a simple observation that I thought was of interest. You're the one twisting and dragging it. You really act like a lawyer sometimes.
  17. Oddly enough, the US Pro Mini Golf Association's National Championship started today.
  18. North of $210M sounds a little steep. The last increase was from $178M to $189M.
  19. It was comparable in the sense of leaving the guy in there too long with the season on the line. I can't believe you weren't screaming at the TV for Tito to get Pedro out of there at over 100 pitches and Matsui up with a chance to make the game 7-2.
  20. Nah, we were a great road team, especially at the end of the year. And we won 2 out of 3 in Cleveland this year. Case closed.
  21. I watched some of it too. Those boys are serious!
  22. Porcello was our best pitcher at the end of the season. Sept numbers Porcello 4-1 2.70 ERA .88 WHIP Buch 3-0 3.14 ERA 1.15 WHIP
  23. A new PGA season starts today too. There's a reason God made TV remotes.
  24. There's a lot of truth there. However I don't think anyone outside the lunatic fringe actually wants to trade Bradley. He just seems like the one who would make the most sense to trade out of our young stars.
