    But here's what I don't get: Farrell didn't pinch run for him when he was on first - not till he got to second. If Betts had hit a double, Papi would have had to run and would be in just as much jeopardy as if he was trying to score from second on a single.

    Personally I think that's one of those ideas that is great in theory but not in reality. I want that Ortiz/Encarnacion type, or something in the ballpark at least.

    I used the word prescient here not long ago to describe sk7326's call that when Koji came back it would resolve a lot of the bullpen problems.

    Possibly, but not until they at least see him play in some real games, I would think.

    It's very tragic. I'm afraid when all the details are known it's going to make us very angry, because I'm guessing this was an aquatic version of a drunk driving tragedy. I'm not going to pass judgment because I too got behind the wheel after drinking when I was in my late teens and early twenties. But it is what it is, a senseless loss of life.

    You're right about Mookie doing better in the early innings. Here are his batting average splits: Innings 1-3 .376 Innings 4-6 .299 Innings 7-9 .270 Here they are for the AL Innings 1-3 .265 Innings 4-6 .260 Innings 7-9 .247 Interesting.

    I'm still slightly baffled why they pinch ran at all, considering the poor options. They didn't pinch run for Ortiz when he was on first base. If Betts hit a double Ortiz would have had to run hard from first to third or home. They waited till he got to second. I know it's kind of a standard move to do this, but in this particular situation, it Steven Wright is your best option besides Ortiz, then Ortiz is still your best option.

    I'd love to have Longoria, but I think it's a pipe dream unless you really give up a lot, as in too much.

    The problem with giving it to the 'best player' is you might have to give it to Trout 5 years in a row. That's boring!

    Clay will not be traded. He represents the same value to the 2017 team as he does to this 2016 team right now - a #6 starter, or a 'rotation reinforcement', as Alex Speier put it yesterday. As Speier says, we have a serious weakness in starting pitching depth due to the non-performance of Owens and Johnson and whoever else might have filled that role. This holds true for 2017 as much as it did for 2016.

    It certainly has been in 2016. Without Shaw (in spite of his tailspin) we'd really have been screwed this year.

    That is true. But I think he is only talking about the marginal effect from a certain baseline. For example, say you are a team that averages 5.5 runs scored and 4.5 runs allowed. Would it be better to increase the 5.5 to 6.0, or to decrease the 4.5 to 4.0, or is it totally neutral?
