  1. Sorry, my problem is I read too many posts.
  2. Maybe a cross-section of all those people. It was managers who awarded a Gold Glove to Rafael Palmeiro in 1999 when he only played 28 games in the field. Aren't you a believer that managers are a bunch of morons?
  3. You really don't believe Mookie is anything special? He was 2nd and 6th in MVP voting the last 2 years. And that's one of the awards where the results actually mean something, I think. I think he's a pretty special talent.
  4. Official title doesn't matter, of course. All that matters is who is the de facto decision-maker.
  5. There's more stuff coming, and I strongly expect that to include J D Martinez. What's a little scary is that we're already projected at 207 million for tax purposes without having done anything!
  6. Pablo was a horrible move, although none of us in our wildest nightmares imagined exactly how horrible it would be. If we had just signed Pablo or Hanley, I think it would fall under the forgivable category. But signing them both, at a combined AAV of 41 million, was unforgivable.
  7. It's not a screwy equation, but it does reflect the fact that so much money has been flushed down the drain on free agent signings like Sandoval. The numbers are real, but a little sick at the same time.
  8. With limited exceptions, like signing Manny Ramirez.
  9. Yeah, true, if we release him some other team can pick him up for minimum wage...it'd probably be an AL East team, and we'd be paying Hanley to hit against us about 75 times this year!
  10. Speier says if Hanley is released the Sox are off the hook for the option.
  11. I don't hate the Moreland move, but I can't get overly excited about bringing back a guy with a 0.9 fWAR.
  12. What's the projected WAR for the Sox 2018 offense as it stands now? Harmony?
  13. Maybe Sandoval wasn't a Ben move. But none of the other moves between the 2014 deadline and 2015 Opening Day were very good either. If it was just Sandoval Ben might still be GM.
  14. I was speaking in general terms about whether ANY team can have continuous contenders under the system as it is now. That's why I was pointing to Theo's Cubs.
  15. German! notin, you gotta do something about the spelling thing, buddy.
  16. It's my understanding that the FanGraphs dollar values are based on free agent salaries and WAR's. As a result the dollar values seem inflated. Right now it's something like $7 million per 1 WAR. It has a lot to do with how many free agents have been expensive busts.
  17. It remains to be seen if it can continue to be done indefinitely. There have been changes that have been geared to create more and more parity. The only possible advantages a team can have are money and smarts. We've got the money. We took a big hit in the smarts department when Theo left. I'm interested to see if he can keep the Cubs a contender for a long time, especially as his core of Bryant and Rizzo get more expensive.
  18. The Yankees being big favorites might not be such a bad thing for us. When I said that about playing for the wild card it was when it looked like the Yankees were about to trade for Cole and it just felt like they were methodically assembling a sort of uber-team. The other thing is I wouldn't feel horrible if we got the wild card spot. You can win it all from that spot. Missing the playoffs altogether would be a huge drag, that's for sure. I'll take any kind of shot at it.
  19. But the patient approach doesn't guarantee anything either. If the playoffs truly are a crapshoot, there is no approach that guarantees a championship.
  20. I told you no such thing.
  21. You can't beat it for vagueness and sweeping generalization.
  22. You really like that word.
  23. Hanley had a .988 OPS for July-August-September/16, .866 for the season. There's still upside there if he's healthy and in a groove. But he's a big question mark, needless to say.
  24. So that's your 'many other catchers'?
  25. Tek is T4 in WAR on that list.
