  1. We can't give up a lot of talent AND take on the whole contract. That could turn it into a bad deal.
  2. One thing he didn't say was that the Sox shouldn't sign Martinez, so apparently he's in favor of that.
  3. Oh, I hear you. I guess my attitude is, we can't just assume we'll get one of them, and we should be happy to get either. As we know, Scotty Boras likes to hold big splashy auctions and drag them out as long as possible. Remember Teixeira? Didn't sign until Christmas Eve or something like that. So it kind of makes sense to take our best shot at Stanton first. If it doesn't work move on to Martinez.
  4. Stanton is younger and a better fielder. But I'll take either one.
  5. Do you have a link to a report that St. Louis is offering full salary relief?
  6. Holy crap, this guy is more creative than moonslav!
  7. Seems like Ainge pulled off a hell of a coup getting Irving.
  8. And now that you mention it, there was that little social media incident after Game 2 of the ALDS with Chapman appearing to be in favor of Joe's firing.
  9. No QO with Martinez - because he was traded in 2017.
  10. I'll predict Lester money for JDM - 6 years, 155 million.
  11. Valid argument, but yet to be tested in the market. Some GM's may be a little leery because not everyone was impressed by the big power surge and we just might see things go back in the other direction.
  12. There's no question that Hanley had the better career before we signed him. If you go by something like previous 3 or 4 seasons, though, Martinez has at least put up consistently strong offensive numbers for a decent stretch. Hanley was more like the human roller coaster.
  13. Horrors never cease, that's the sad reality of the world. RIP
  14. Stanton's contract is certainly too much, but he's one of the top position players in the game and he's young. I'll be really surprised if Miami has to eat much of the contract.
  15. Oh, I know. $200 mill is a joke IMO, and Boras is a joker.
  16. $200 mill? Good, my hatred and disdain for Boras feels born anew.
  17. I see. How many reports have you read that the Cardinals are interested in J.D. Martinez?
  18. As in Sam Travis Shaw?
  19. Yes, it's an awful tragedy, but it also has to be said: this was death by foolishly high-risk activity.
  20. Until the awful Cliff Years starting in 2021, of course. It'll be the end of an almost 20-year run.
  21. You're right, since 2002 there haven't been any teams you knew were toast before the season even began. That's a pretty impressive run.
  22. He's a little whacked IMO. He doesn't even have the Red Sox listed as one of the teams interested in JD Martinez.
  23. More sucky news. RIP
  24. You should see what Grandson's Grandpappy looks like...
  25. It's not so much the 'desperate dave' part, but Larry Cook's posts about Dombrowski being a 'pillow biter' and so on are a wee bit over the top. It brings to mind some of those old witty rejoinders like 'Hey, did the guy screw your wife or something?'
