  1. Frankly this is a topic I only got onto because there's absolutely nothing else going on.
  2. Such is capitalism. Personally I wouldn't mind having a billionaire for a client.
  3. Yep, case by case basis.
  4. John Henry's parents were soybean farmers. I believe he made his fortune in the market.
  5. a) It was his baseball ops people who made this particular stupid mistake, presumably. Henry's wealth from the Red Sox only continues to increase in spite of such setbacks.
  6. They didn't become billionaires by being stupid and giving money away.
  7. I'm starting to think maybe we do need a speech from Scott Boras crying collusion to liven up this offseason.
  8. We were already ahead of that curve when we got Joe Kelly and Allen Craig for John Lackey.
  9. We may be lucky the Yanks didn't get him for a similar steal.
  10. We just may be starting to see the first signs of fiscal sanity this offseason...which I guess is why it's been so boring.
  11. The foundation of the baseball economy is fan interest. Attendance is going down. I don't know about other teams' TV ratings but I know NESN ratings are down. At some point the gravy train has to hit the brakes.
  12. We still have Bill James!
  13. MLB total attendance has been gradually decreasing since 2007. 2007 total attendance 79.5 million 2017 total attendance 72.7 million
  14. Specifically how can revenue continue to increase? Is attendance increasing? Are cable TV subscriptions increasing?
  15. No, I don't think owners should keep getting a larger slice of the pie. Personally I don't see how revenue can continue to increase as it has. I think a correction is coming.
  16. No, Boras isn't the devil. Players hire him because he has a track record of getting the biggest contracts, that's no mystery. He just irks me with some of his public pronouncements, like the one about the Marlins being a 'pawn shop', and his silly statements like J D Martinez being the 'King Kong of Slug.' He's just one of those people I'd like to see taken down a peg.
  17. What's more, by changing the rules they effectively screwed Castillo even worse than he already was-as far as having a chance to play major league ball, I mean.
  18. Perhaps it also had to do with you saluting Boras's use of the term 'pawn shop' as a nice colorful metaphor.
  19. By first permitting the practice, and then forbidding it, they effectively locked Castillo in no man's land. Maybe they should have made some sort of special provision for his situation.
  20. Wow, nice redirection attempt. The Red Sox are continuing to pay Mr. Castillo, as far as I know. What happened with him was unfortunate, but it was a result of the vagaries of the rules as they were. Do you really think the Red Sox wouldn't prefer for Castillo to be giving them some production at the major league level in return for their 72.7 million dollars? You are really going off the rails with some of this stuff.
  21. Organized crime is another example of an unethical operation that 'continues to thrive'. Your point is well taken - 'continuing to thrive' doesn't mean anything as far as ethics are concerned, so why would someone even try to imply that it does?
  22. What business is it of Scott Boras how the new Miami Marlins ownership deal with their financial issues? 'Pawn shop' is a typical Boras sound bite. He likes the attention. I don't see how you can defend this as professional conduct by a player agent. But you seem to have a 'see no evil' policy when it comes to Boras.
  23. Doesn't change the fact that a contract that long for a baseball player is absurd...or it's a debatable point at least.
  24. The absurdity or non-absurdity of Stanton's contract will be judged by most people in the future based on what he does. Just like if David Price had won a Cy Young and led us to a championship there would be a much different opinion of his contract. The risk factor is huge. But if you're a big-market team like the Yanks and Sox you pretty much have to take some risks like that. Your fans demand it, and they ultimately pay the bills.
  25. Yes, it's probably fair to say that Williams had extraordinary hand/eye coordination, which simply can't be taught.
