  1. Last season's crop of free agents was very thin.
  2. That's a fair observation, but maybe we shouldn't overreact to what might be a one-year aberration. Things can't be expected to move in perfect lockstep. If this becomes a consistent pattern, then I would agree, it's a serious matter.
  3. I don't disagree with the general notion that players deserve their share. But at the same time, teams should not be obligated to sign excessively risky contracts. Let's assume for the sake of argument that JD Martinez is worth $25 million a year and that the Red Sox have offered him 5/$125 million. The salary they are offering him is entirely consistent with market value. What's holding things up would appear to be the length of the contract. I suspect he would sign for 6/$150 million at this point. But it's that 6th year that is the breaking point because of the added risk. Why should teams keep signing such long deals, given the terrible results at the back end of most such contracts? The whole system needs to be rebalanced somehow.
  4. Yes, it's quite possible this is one of those 'perfect storm' situations. It's not as though we see a bunch of megadeals every single offseason. Last year only one free agent got a deal of $100K or more - Cespedes, who got 4/$110K.
  5. The Red Sox are clearly one of the teams with the most motivation to sign Martinez. They need a power bat, they have a window to compete for a championship, they have a fanbase they want to keep interested in order to keep their revenues up. All factors considered, what other teams have as much motivation to sign Martinez?
  6. I think in this case money and principle are pretty much tied together, in the minds of JDM and Boras at least.
  7. Yeah, I don't really have a whole lot of sympathy either, but serious labor unrest isn't good for anybody, especially us fans.
  8. You mean next time, which is a few years away. The union seems to have gotten snookered a bit this time around.
  9. Very nice! I may have to add something to this myself.
  10. It would have been nice if he explained the last part, as in what other team might sign Martinez.
  11. If Hosmer has 7 year offers and is holding out for 8 he and Boras are being foolish.
  12. So that would mean the entire justification or lack of justification of your team-building approach depends on luck.
  13. Wouldn't it be amusing if something big happens tomorrow on Groundhog Day?
  14. But the trades of Espinoza and Kopech had a lot to do with us making the playoffs last year.
  15. According to Keith Law, as per post #27 on this thread: "(The Red Sox) 2017 draft class was one of the best given where they picked, with three potential first-round talents coming in their first five picks."
  16. All this is quite reasonable. But the change seems to be a rather abrupt one, and if I'm one of the players I might be a little suspicious about it all. If the players as a collective get really unhappy with the situation there's going to be trouble, and everyone will lose, like we did in 1994. We'll have lots of time to debate who's right and who's wrong when another season gets cancelled.
  17. This offseason has gone from merely boring to agonizing. It's not just about when's JDM gonna sign anymore - it's about WTF is going on in general - I smell huge labor trouble, and I might be starting to get on the side of the players in this thing.
  18. Lavarnway just got signed by the Pirates to a minor league deal LOL
  19. Middlebrooks signed a minor-league deal with the Phillies for this year.
  20. Mookie won his arbitration case and gets $10.5 million this year.
  21. If he was willing to sign a minor league deal and if he demonstrated he was healthy, it's pretty much the same use and upside as all the other dumpster dives. But you already know all that.
  22. It might be bad news, but it's not necessarily bad news, let's put it that way.
  23. So what though...we all know it's normal for a team to use 7-10 starters in a season.
