  1. Certainly true. But at issue is what other offers do the Red Sox have to beat? That's normally all that really matters.
  2. I think your position is reasonable but debatable. Certainly when John Henry hired DD he was looking for an aggressive approach. At the end of the day I think the current position can be traced to Henry, Dombrowski, Lucchino, and Cherington all. They all played their roles. You'll never hear me say anything bad about Theo, though. He was great and they screwed up letting him go.
  3. It's not just years that matter. Cain 5/80 JDM 5/125 Notice any difference there? Also worth noting is that Cain is a 'complete player'. JDM is a bad defensive player with a DH profile.
  4. But does this mean that the Red Sox should quite literally outbid themselves if necessary?
  5. This isn't like buying a car where you can walk away from one dealership and go to another one selling the identical vehicle for less. There's only one truly big bat available and it's JDM.
  6. What's so unusual is that so many other players are still unsigned. We've never seen anything like this kind of stagnancy. On the other side of the coin, if the Red Sox primary focus is JDM, why should they move on to other less preferable options if it seems highly unlikely no other team is going to make a serious move on JDM? He's not going to hold out forever with $125 million or so sitting on the table.
  7. And how would we look for 2018 without Sale and Kimbrel?
  8. Apparently we had some discussions with the O's, but they were asking for a ton, and it was only for one season of him.
  9. Machado isn't a Boras client at present.
  10. Gotta hang in there a few more weeks and see what happens. I'm pretty sure DD will not go over 130 or 135 million for JDM.
  11. Pure as Ivory Snow, just like Scott Boras's heart.
  12. The dreaded fWAR-bWAR discrepancy strikes again! Cue Dewey with the condemnations of WAR.
  13. If you're trying to plan around what other teams are doing you might as well give up. IMHO
  14. Is it possible that all of Boras's fearsome foursome will still be unsigned on February 1?
  15. I see nothing wrong with DD's strategy for 2016 or 2017 considering we won the division both years. What more can you ask? We gagged in the playoffs both years, of course, and that tends to put more of a negative spin on everything.
  16. Maybe, but let's see some specifics as far as the alternative moves he could have made to upgrade the pitching.
  17. moon won't rest until he unloads Hanley on somebody LOL
  18. Although in fairness he was coming off a strong season (5.6 fWAR).
  19. Well, I like the last sentence, anyway!
  20. Braun is PED and character tainted big-time, unfortunately.
  21. Yeah, contracts like Ellsbury and Crawford are exactly why 'the industry' is supposedly re-thinking contracts of that length...
  22. I don't think DD was supposed to 'forsake the future'. My position has been that he had little choice but to trade a lot of prospects to upgrade the pitching staff. To date, DD has done next to nothing in terms of acquiring position players. It's been pitching, pitching, pitching. His legacy as a Red Sox GM still has a little while to play out.
  23. Looks like you still gotta overpay for FA talent.
  24. Too bad Slash wasn't here...he'd be heavily in favor of this LOL
