Maybe some of the declines had to do with other teams taking advantage of our passive hitting philosophy - taking all those first pitch strikes.

I agree that there were a surprising number of declines. The only thing I would point out is that some of the declines may be traced to injuries (Bogaerts, Hanley) and sample size differences (Benintendi). Also Betts said at one point that he was been pitched to differently and was making some adjustments etc.

There's no evidence that the players don't still consider him one of the leaders though.

I'm just trying to interpret the information we're getting. When Mookie Betts says the team wasn't ready for the playoffs two years in a row that seems to be a knock on the manager. And of course the manager was let go in spite of back to back division titles. I defended Farrell quite a bit this year. But now there's new information to consider.

No, I was talking more about blaming it on Pedroia this year.

I just read some of Mookie's comments and they are a little surprising, because he's suggesting the team wasn't really ready for the playoffs the last 2 years. Frankly it all sounds like an indictment of Farrell. But let's not forget David Ortiz was on that 2016 team too. I thought he was the leader then! (I'm just saying that to show how unfair some of this stuff can be.)

If there was turmoil it really didn't show up in the way the team finished this year. They were 18-9 in August and 17-10 in September. There was no collapse like there was in 2011. We're hearing there was some tension, and a lack of fun, but it's hardly a case of a team falling apart.

The only thing about Barfield is that they tried to convert him to a pitcher for a couple of years and that may have set him back quite a bit with the hitting. (Yes, I read the article on him by Speier in the Globe.)

If I was going to take a stab at reading between the lines, I'd say that the fact that Farrell was let go after winning the division 2 years in a row kind of points the finger in his direction.

Why wouldn't we want him to consider himself a leader? He's got all the credentials. He's a highly accomplished veteran player who's been on 2 World Series winners and who's known for giving 100% effort.

Optimism this time of year is good. One thing I've noticed though is how fast it disappears once the real games start. Just check out the game threads from the first few games of the season and you'll see it. I remember people getting down on Moreland last year because he started 0 for 8 or something.

I agree. I see nothing wrong with what Pedroia said to the press. He was basically just affirming that he accepts that role, is how I interpret it.

I doubt that it ends the JD saga. But if our offer to him gets pulled I'm sure we'll find out pretty quickly.
