  1. If George Steinbrenner was still alive that's probably exactly what would happen. In the great Yankee tradition, George loved to stick it to the Red Sox whenever possible and take players that had been with the Sox or almost with the Sox like A-Rod.
  2. Talksox GM's are playin' hardball now!
  3. Hanley has some X factor upside of course...he was probably one of the best hitters in baseball the last half of 2016.
  4. I don't think there can be any doubt now that Boras made a blunder with his original campaign about the King Kong of Slug looking for $210 million. There has to be some embarrassment factor there for Martinez. It seems Boras had no clue whatsoever what he was walking into this offseason.
  5. Then I might look at: Last by how much, time-wise?
  6. I don't know if I dreamed it or not, but I'm pretty sure someone on MLB Network said last night the Sox actual offer to JDM is 5/110.
  7. They may not always go with the most money, but in the history of free agency, how many cases are there of a player taking an offer that was substantially lower than what another team offered?
  8. It's just a bad situation all around. A lot of the unsigned players are going to have their own training camp. (Boras clients will not attend.) It seems like an admirable idea, but what happens if one of these players gets hurt? Yikes.
  9. Are you saying that if Martinez played for Arizona he would live there year-round?
  10. We're not stuck with the vesting option if he's released. The rest of what you said is the problem for us. I can just see some other AL East team picking him up and Hanley raking against us for 19 games while we pay him to do it.
  11. Sure, but it's not uncommon for guys coming off surgery to have some extra rest days either. I'm sure our crack medical staff will figure it out!
  12. I actually used to argue with those who said exercising Buch's 2016 option was a no-brainer. I didn't agree with that either. To me it was a coin flip.
  13. You took that position with a guess that was proven to be the correct one.
  14. If it was the late Seventies, I'd be panicking. I was a very intense Sox fan back then and the Yankees were the evil overlords. I was there for 1978, which for me was the most intensely heartbreaking season in franchise history. Now I think I'm much more matter-of-fact and unemotional about it all. Now I just think 'Well, I would really prefer to have a better record than the NYY at the end of the season, and if there's something we can do to improve our odds I'm in favor of it.'
  15. Maybe if Boras really was such a good agent he would have advised JDM to take the 125 million long ago and saved everyone a lot of grief.
  16. Yeah, probably so. On the other hand, I'm guessing Scotty Boy has a lot to do with them sitting on our offer for 2 months.
  17. From what I read, that interest is gone. I would guess it was gone before they signed Moreland.
  18. I don't think we should really judge the guy based on these vague second-hand reports. But maybe he should issue some sort of clarification before they're burning him in effigy in Boston...
  19. Superbs should definitely be highly paid.
  20. I'll bet not too many people remember that Crawford was writing a blog that year...I sure didn't.
  21. Now this is interesting!
  22. He's under the radar. DD better grab him before the Yanks do.
  23. Wright has pitched very little and very badly since his infamous pinch-running stint. I wouldn't bet a whole lot on him. If he gives us 100 decent innings it's a bonus.
  24. Just wait till Clay holds his showcase.
