    Rivera pitched a lot of 2 inning saves in those postseasons for the Yanks. He was the 8th inning guy and the 9th inning guy.

    It's a very strange time to be bashing Holt. He has a .920 OPS and he had some big hits the last few games before going on the DL. He has an fWAR of 0.5 in 16 games, so he has already earned $4 million on FanGraphs dollars and is making about $2 million this year.

    That's not quite accurate. It's worst hitter out of your top 5, so 5th best hitter, basically.

    Red Sox postseason history would suggest that a great closer was a difference-maker. Foulke in 04, Papelbon in 07, Koji in 13. Vs. Schiraldi in 86, and the Committee that Grady didn't trust in 03.

    And I sort of hate to bring this up, but Craig did kind of spit the bit in his most crucial single outing as a Red Sox...

    It's not really that complicated. Kimbrel is a special talent, but he's also a specialist. He plays about 65 innings a year. Everyone would love to have him back. The question is how much are you willing to pay? Chapman got 5/86, so Kimbrel's agent is probably thinking at least 5/95.

    His OPS went up by 121 points last night.

    Correct. If they bring him up at all the cat is truly out of the bag and can't be put back in. Castillo would be on the Sox payroll for tax purposes until his contract expires at the end of 2020.

    I think there's some merit in this argument. One thing that needs to be noted is that a blown save does not always result in a loss.

    They can't bring him up, they can't trade him, they can't do anything but pay him 12 million or so to entertain the fans in Pawtucket.

    But Kimmi, this all implies that there is no such thing as a good decision or a bad decision by a manager. He might as well literally flip a coin every time he needs to make a decision in a game.

    I'm sure JBJ works his butt off on his hitting. It's a struggle for him.

    Of course. The only real 're-think' is that maybe you should be prepared to use your best relief pitcher in the 7th or 8th inning like Francona has been doing with Miller.

    The disconnect is between this idea and the idea that managers can't make any difference...it's kind of a running argument here.

    Then of course there are those bloody defensive shifts...not one of my favorite developments in modern baseball. Thanks to guys like Joe Maddon who think the game can be micro-managed.

    The biggest strategic moves in baseball are made by the pitcher and the catcher - what kind of pitch to throw and the location, and the sequencing of the pitches. It's a limited range of strategy but there's a lot of information about the hitters that goes into it.

    Kimbrel is a special talent without a doubt. The question comes down to how much will it take to keep him. He will be one of the big prizes on the free agent market.

    That's a good point - football is so much about the game planning. A guy like Belichick spends a big chunk of a week preparing plays and schemes and whatever for 60 minutes of football.

    I've argued the same thing - that left field in Fenway is somewhat hazardous to the health, especially the area where Swihart got injured.

    Game plans most certainly involve trying to predict what the opponent will do, how they will react. Predict is just another word for guess. None of it is exact science. There are always variables that can't be foreseen.

    Looks like it's a damn good thing we didn't sign Lynn or Cobb. They are both off to horrific starts. Cobb has given up 30 hits in 11.2 innings! That's almost hard to believe.
