  1. Cora knew there would be a lot of grousing about sitting Betts but he did it anyway. To me it shows cojones. It reminds me of Francona. He would do things that he knew would be unpopular too. Cora played for Francona and he probably learned quite a bit from him.
  2. The impact of anything a manager does, whether before, during or after the game, would seem to be completely unquantifiable.
  3. This randomness thing does get a bit confusing. Why wouldn't exceptionally good late-inning pitchers that are generally used to protect close leads enhance your chances to win close games?
  4. It's the platinum sombrero.
  5. Um, didn't Kelly pitch the 8th and 9th innings last night giving up just a walk?
  6. You can call it New Age managing philosophy, I guess. I think maybe it includes the idea that a travel day isn't a true rest day. I also think the Red Sox looked at how the team bombed out in the first round the last 2 years and decided that they wanted to try a really different approach this year. I'm just trying to figure it out myself, to be honest. But I'm willing to think Cora might have a good idea what he's doing.
  7. Cora said up front he was going to be giving guys rest days and using the bench a lot. Apparently he meant what he said.
  8. Well, dgale, you're definitely the front-runner for Most Confident Poster of 2018.
  9. Depends on how you look at it. We only scored 10 runs in the Tampa series. The pitching just had 1 bad inning.
  10. I think you may have that backwards, mvp. Kelly had a 523 OPS in high lev, and 502 in medium lev, so his scores were really good.
  11. Game time is 6:10 pm, folks.
  12. I like Cora a lot already, myself.
  13. 'Smooth ride to the post season' may be a tad premature after 5 games against bad teams.
  14. Sure. And for pitchers, health is here today, gone tomorrow.
  15. Thunder is rolling through Florida! Keep 'er going.
  16. FWIW, Xander also put on some muscle this offseason, I think. Maybe not as noticeable as Beni's.
  17. He was raking pretty well in spring games FWIW. I think he'll be fine.
  18. If we look at Ben's attempts to secure a closer, he made 3 separate trades for high profile closer types-Bailey, Melancon and Hanrahan, all of which failed. He traded away quite a few players in the process-Reddick and Lowrie the only ones who may have been missed, I think. Ben also signed Koji Uehara, which was a brilliant success and one of the best moves of his tenure. Dombrowski went for the conservative and expensive play with Kimbrel. Dombrowski had come in for a lot of criticism in his tenure with the Tigers about his bullpens and closers. Tigers fans may forever believe they would have beaten us in 2013 if they had a real deal closer who wouldn't have blown Game 2.
  19. I hear you. I wonder if he's had any more injections.
  20. I read about this. It wasn't a no-hitter at the time though, it was a one-hitter. Otherwise I agree 100%, the Twins had no right to be complaining because this backup catcher bunts against their heavy over shift. The Twins made themselves look like a bunch of whiny pussies on this one.
  21. The Tiger?
  22. I certainly get the farm stuff. Perhaps I should rephrase: it's hard to keep a good young core together, even if you're one of the rich teams. That's a consequence of the combination of high salaries and the tax rules. Especially now with arb salaries for elite young players rising fairly rapidly.
