  1. This is where some smart folks notice an overlooked flaw in the way a game is set up. Much like finding a loophole in the tax code.
  2. You said this: "I'm not sure if people get the idea of what depth is..." Do you really think 'people' don't grasp the idea that pitchers are fragile and having adequate backup is a good thing? The real issue at hand is whether the 2018 Red Sox began the season with sufficient depth. We don't really know the answer. But you could probably make a case that Johnson, Velazquez and Wright look like a semblance of reasonable depth. And if it turns out that more is needed, there are some other dumpster dive options out there as always.
  3. I think it's probably a combination of things. He's healthy, he worked hard in the offseason and added a little strength, and as you say his approach seems better and more aggressive. Fun to watch, that's for sure!
  4. I disagree, I thought Farrell was generally fine with how he handled the pitching changes. As far as looking strong is concerned, Sale looked strong as an ox in that game he reached 300 K's. But in retrospect it might have been a good idea to pull him sooner. A lot of it's always going to be guesswork anyway.
  5. Every team in baseball history has been susceptible to pitching injuries. With regard to whether the Red Sox have 'enough' pitching depth, you need some sort of comparison point. How does our depth compare to that of other contending teams? How does it compare to that of other Red Sox contending teams of the Theo Epstein era?
  6. I'll get it started some time this week.
  7. OTOH, maybe your comment that our opening day rotation was 'pretty bad' because it included Johnson and Velazquez for a start or two was overblown too...
  8. Yeah Devers looks fantastic.
  9. Looks like Durable Dick has settled in.
  10. Absolutely, if that's what we're talking about it makes sense.
  11. Talk of trading JBJ during the 2018 season is crazy talk. Talking about it after the 2018 season has some validity.
  12. LOL yes there has been an extraordinary amount of beetching going on considering the team's record.
  13. Oh, there's nothing sad about it at all. Enjoy the fact that we have 6 or 7 months of baseball before us.
  14. Sux. Little else to say.
  15. The premise is correct but we're still dealing with what moon would call a teeny-tiny sample size. End of thread.
  16. Even Nolan Ryan only struck the batter out 25% of the time.
  17. Don't you think the pitcher's goal in general is to make a really tough pitch to hit - the batter is either going to miss it or if he hits it it's going to be weak or glancing contact.
  18. I have never said the Moreland signing was a great one. I just didn't think it was a horrible one. He got a Chris Young contract to be a backup/insurance first baseman.
  19. As far as JDM is concerned, I suspect that the late start to spring training might have thrown him off a bit.
  20. It's true. Hitting and pitching at the MLB level are both highly specialized and difficult skills.
  21. Not a bad point...I'm sure in the Yanks case it wasn't because they ran out of money.
  22. It's in the same place as the Yankees' Greatest Bullpen of All Time - off to a slower start than expected. Such is baseball.
  23. I think it's time for me to start my thread about Baseball Philosophy - in which we seek explanations for WHY there is so much randomness in baseball, WHY hitters and pitchers have such hot and cold streaks etc.
