  1. That $67 million is more than the entire A's payroll for 2024.
  2. I described last offseason as Ohtani-crickets-Yamamoto-crickets. It was awful, really. And I'm sure the Boras Four would agree. This year feels much different. Seems like the owners have gotten some financial projections they like.
  3. I'd like to see some historical numbers on signings and trades that take place during these meetings. I'm pretty sure there have been some years recently where very little actually happened during the meetings.
  4. I don't know, but that has to be the A's biggest contract outlay in quite some time.
  5. Yeah, it'd be nice if they saw things that way too, we wouldn't have sucked so bad the last 3 years.
  6. Dice-K was a blind auction. I can't even remember how the Moncada thing worked.
  7. True, but I was thinking in terms of a front office that has stayed under the first tax line 4 out of the last 5 years. Somehow I don't think they really look at 10.75 mill as chump change.
  8. The primary fact is that they traded him with a year left on his contract. From which comes the fact that they ceased efforts to extend him. And now Zack Scott seems to have confirmed that their final offer to him was close to but short of $300 million.
  9. We have no clue what they're going to do. Pretty sure no one had Justin Wilson and Aroldis Chapman on their lists of likely Sox acquisitions.
  10. Story looked like it might be a lateral move at the time, and that's exactly what it ended up being. That's why to some it didn't really feel like much of a move and still doesn't.
  11. Eew...Jeter Downs is kind of begging for the "if my aunt had balls..." line....
  12. Any credit they get for Bogaerts is wiped out by Story, so a wash at best.
  13. Yes, it was different. As you say everyone knew we wanted JD. No one knew we wanted Story. That's different.
  14. I never understood why he would. He basically threw out the challenge to the media to follow up on it, and we got crickets.
  15. Bogaerts himself said he was just expecting a good fair negotiation and that the offer he got (one extra year for $30 million) was so disappointing that they didn't even respond to it. And he had shown himself to be very fair on that first extension, regardless of Boras.
  16. Except things went to s**t in 2019, with the firing of Dombrowski a clear indicator that all was not well at the top. The bottom line is they didn't make an offer that was attractive enough.
  17. That's not the argument though. Everyone agrees the contract he actually got was ridiculous. The argument is that they could have retained him for a much more reasonable number if they really tried, instead of letting it get to the auction stage.
  18. I appreciate your positivity. I'm just venting. The Chapman signing bummed me out and made me question the judgment of our front office all over again.
  19. OK, well, it's all speculation, I get that. But we also have to keep in mind that the Dodgers were an attractive destination in many ways, and that must have factored in as well.
  20. But as we know their offers to Bogaerts were laughably short.
  21. Are you really trying to use COVID as an excuse for losing Betts?
  22. With Mookie it all has to be viewed through the lens that he was and is one of the best ballplayers in history - a truly complete player, which is really hard to find. You can't lump him in with regular good players. Soto is great and yet he's not as good as Mookie.
  23. Maybe all the more reason the Sox should have kept Mookie, if it was thought that prices might be affected by COVID. And when you look at the basket of crap they got back for him... Not enough lipstick in the world to cover this pig.
