    Little Raffy's K/BB ratio of 10 to 1 is one that no player has ever sustained. It's twice as bad as the career marks of Will Middlebrooks and Bobby Dalbec. He has to find a way to improve that, or he'll be primarily a late inning defensive replacement.

    Well played. The thing about Jeter was, he kind of magically concealed his deficiencies at SS. You don't really remember any nasty misplays he made at critical moments.

    It's impossible to say if they would have won any more than 5. If you really want to go down that rabbit hole you'd have to show which years it would have made a difference. It's freakin' impossible, man.

    Good article. Good point that second base is a riddle in itself. And that Bregman at second might end up being the best move for the defense.

    It's always been like that, it's just that we're inundated by it now because of the net.

    "Pretty much every" is a tricky one. I mean, there are quite a few games where you can point to defensive lapses as a factor in the outcome. The Red Sox have had some total clown shows on D the last few years.

    Yes, from all accounts it was massively uncertain that he would choose Boston. Considering that Detroit offered him $171.5 million, the Sox were kind of a long shot!

    Yeah, just totally impossible to say. ARod's bat disappeared in a lot of those postseasons they fell short, 2009 being the notable exception. When it comes down to a small number of games like it does in the postseason, I think it's usually the pitching or the hitting that decides it.

    They won 5 rings with Jeter after winning zero from 1979-1995. Pretty hard to make a case there.

    We're all entitled to our speculations, that's for sure. Personally I think Casas's stock dropped a lot last year because of a) the injury and b) the focus on the Sox porous infield defense and his contributions to it. As for Breslow lying about shopping Casas, I can't really condemn him for that. What's the benefit in being truthful about something like that? It's a no-win situation.

    If I had to pick just one thing that turned that series, I would go with Torre's decision in Game 5 to start the 8th with Gordon instead of Rivera.

    But we don't really know just how aggressively. If they really wanted to get rid of him you'd think some team would have taken him. Breslow was apparently asking for more return than other teams were willing to give. Is that aggressive?
