  1. You just described Andy Petitte. He sure was good. On a short-term deal, he would make sense, or at least that's my opinion.
  2. So is the bandbox known as US Cellular though.
  3. Duchscherer couldn't stay healthy to save his mother.
  4. Interesting pitchers bolded. Thoughts?
  5. I disagree with this. He's always had trouble retiring lefties, and last year was no exception. His season was very flukey. Trading him still looks like a mistake though.
  6. I apologize but this is a very big pet peeve of mine: It's not BucholTz, it's Bucholz. Anyways, i disagree with the notion that Lester is not an ace. He hasn't even reached the ceiling of what he can do. I will concede though that the lack of discipline he (and all of them showed) last year may give people pause about calling him an ace, but this year was most likely just a bump in the road for his rise towards the elite. Remember he is just entering his prime.
  7. The Yankees struck gold by looking for C-grade arms that were actually healthy and caught lightning in a bottle with a couple of 'em. The Sox could do the same, but no retreads or guys with attitude problems.
  8. Remember the last time "buy low" candidates were used to shore up the rotation in Penny and Smoltz? How'd that turn out?
  9. Please please please no Kazmir. Oswalt on a two-year deal doesn't sound too bad. But they need to build rotation depth besides the fifth spot (which may as well be Aceves.)
  10. After announcing it, Cherington mentioned that "buy low" candidates may be used to shore up rotation depth. Color me terrified.
  11. There's another 3B in the MLB putting up big numbers despite an unpredecented lack of discipline. In fact, he's playing in the WS right now. I don't think we know enough about Middlebrooks to be making comparisons to other minor league players. The stats don't always tell the whole story.
  12. Great game last night, but today's article on MLB.com about a communication breakdown about TLR and his bullpen coach may help shed some light on the lefty vs Napoli debacle. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20111024&content_id=25774312&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb
  13. I am a realist too, but on the other side of the fence. The whole "WS or bust" rethoric is a setup for year-in, year-out dissapointment given the variability of playoff baseball. As for the rest of your post, can i take it out to dinner sometime?
  14. Francona's legacy is well appreciated but it is time for a change. The fact that he lost the clubhouse, as you say yourself, is a testament to the fact that his style wasn't working anymore. Change is needed.
  15. So by this logic, 29 of the 30 teams (including seven of the eight that make the postseason) fail miserably every season. I don't agree with that.
  16. MLB playoff series are probably the most unpredictable type of post-season series in any sport. You can't "expect" to beat anyone, because anything can happen in a short series. The 2006 Cardinals were arguably the worst team in the playoffs and won it all. Making the playoffs should be considered a success IMO, but you're welcome to disagree. However, i think that it's a bit silly to name a season in which your team made the playoffs a failure.
  17. So from 2001 to 2011, every season except 2009 is a failure for the Yankees even though they've won the division on an almost yearly basis, have reached the playoffs almost every year and have reached the World Series several times? I don't see it. Even with the high payroll, every year that the Yankees have made the playoffs has been a success, and ditto for the Red Sox.
  18. I can see you have quite a high opinion of yourself. May be time to test out that ignore feature to avoid future hassle....
  19. Some people on this site seem to love hyperbole/rhetoric to sickening levels. They were a win away from the WS in 2008 and made the playoffs in '09, both succesful seasons. If you think otherwise, you're either a retardedly entitled fan (a seemingly ongoing issue with RS nation) or have really unrealistic expectations.
  20. You keep mentioning the fact that Carpenter "sucked" and "underachieved", which is not true. He had a 3.45 season ERA, pitched 237.1 innings and really only had one bad month, which was May. He had ERA's of: 3.89, 3.00, 2.68, 4.08, 2.15 in the other months. Although September was his best month, he was really good in April and August, and excellent in June and July.
  21. That's why the statistic is flawed. It overvalues IP regardless of actual results for the pitcher, specially since it uses defense-ignoring stats that make performances from a guy like Lackey (who was a line drive generator for the other team) look much better than they actual are since he had decent FIP-related peripherals (K/9, BB/9).
  22. I like the idea of Bud Black. He was known as a stiff-arm Pitching coach wit the Angels who got the best out of Horse-Face (Lackey) before heading off West. He's also a good in-game tactician as well as very knowledgeable about pitching issues from his days as a pitching coach. He's also supposedly pretty tough, unlike Francona, who was pretty vanilla.
  23. Well i was assuming that since Verlander was previously mentioned as one of the guys who has a "rubber arm" by equating the settings (playoff baseball) it would give validity to the fact that, more likely than not, Leyland would have continued his habit of letting Verlander throw 130 + pitches regardless of the initial results in an inning. It was more an attempt to illustrate the difference on the usual behaviors of some managers regarding some pitchers. Observation of Leyland's management of Verlander for the season would tend to back up that statement.
