  1. You're pretty damn sharp aren't you!
  2. Washington made the right choice. If someone's going to beat me, it better no be Pujols.
  3. Not "clutch". Whatever. Ask Carl Crawford why he didn't come up with that ball. Papelbon was one of the best closers in the league last year, no way to argue that.
  4. JOSH HAMILTON! THE DROUGHT ENDS!
  5. It's nitpicking because he dislikes the player. Simple as that.
  6. This is why a steady closer is so important. Every Feliz save is like playing hot potato with a ticking time bomb, and he finally screwed up, and at what time!
  7. Bard will pitch where he is asked to pitch. What he wants doesn't matter. Pap is not worth what he's looking for, but the point is that he won't get it either. The Sox can bring him back at their price if they have patience.
  8. Agree. Lewis should not taken that AB.
  9. Cardinals doing their absolute best to lose this game.
  10. There's not much to be done either way. What they need is a legitimate number 4 starter (Buehrle or Jackson, both is not happening) and a couple of guys to provide SP depth. Signing Aramis Ramirez and letting go of Ortiz should be contemplated if the price is right, keeping RF open for the kids and allowing for essentially a contract swap that would fix the "a little bit too much left handed hitting" problem.
  11. Assets like JD Drew, Mike Cameron , Jason Varitek and Tim Wakefield? My point isn't that they're going to make a huge splash in the FA market. It's that they will make improvements to the team within the realm of what is logically possible without hitting the luxury threshold.
  12. You need to spend money if you want to make money. If he wants to gain some playoff revenue, Henry is sure to understand that he needs to improve the product, and the product was very close to making the playoffs this season. Also, you can be certain that, because they had insurance on Lackey (and the clause in his contract tells you they did) some of the would-be Lackey salary money will be re-invested on the team. If your point was that they will stick to the luxury tax threshold, i would believe you, but i'm not buying that he won't increase payroll as far as the luxury tax permits.
  13. Excellent post. I'll add to that the fact that it was his first full year in the Majors, meaning that he should get better, specially in the OBP department, since one of the most shining parts of the kid's scouting report has been plate discipline. You can't have an All-Star at every position.
  14. There's something to be said about consistency in anything. Including posting on a forum.
  15. Where exactly did Cherington say they would pay Ortiz big bucks? They said they wanted to re-sign him, but everyone knows how the market for aging DH's has been trending lately. What's this even supposed to mean?
  16. FIP is a highly flawed statistic, and Mark Buehrle is exactly the pitcher it tends to under value. Because it doesn't take into consideration any batted ball besides HR, it undervalues pitchers who have low strikeout rates (like Buehrle) but overvalues pitchers who are batting practice to the other team (like Lackey, whose high LD% is a trend, not an outlier, making his high BABIP deserved). While it does add a league-specific value, it still has definite shortcomings. WAR and FIP are both useful tools, but they're not good measures of a player's value by themselves.
  17. WAR overvalues IP (and FIP) when assigning value to a pitcher. That's the reason why Lackey was massively overvalued by the statistic in 2010 to a 4.1 WAR and a 16.4 mill dollar value. The problem with Buehrle would probably be a combination of a decrease of effectivenes due to the move to the much heavier-hitting AL East to go with his skills eroding due to age which could mean both a decrease in his regular peripherals (ERA, BB/9, WHIP) and his IP by association.
