  1. It's a different time. Teams want to protect their investment. As the poster jacksonianmarch mentioned above, the amount of pitchers blowing their arms out and screwing up their careers in the 60's-80's is insane. Teams nowadays want to take every precaution to keep pitchers healthy, and obviously, not every pitcher has the same amount of stamina so they take care of them on an individual basis.
  2. Wow. Exactly. I have a theory. The reason why the media drags every player or prominent Red Sox figure through the coals is because most Red Sox fans have become spoiled prima donnas and eat the stories up. Epstein wasn't as good as a lot of people proclaimed him to be, but he was good, and brought two WS titles to Boston, Duquette's players involved or no Duquette's players involved. Sox fans have become just as bad, if not worse, than the Yankee fans they love to criticize and berate.
  3. I tend to agree with the idea that Pujols will remain a Cardinal, but you never know.
  4. Correct me if i'm wrong, but don't you guys think you're pretty much making up this 100 pitch rule? What you usually see in games is either a younger pitcher whose arm is being protected pitch under an actual limit, or a veteran who looks tired and they take him out for a tough matchup near or above 100 pitches. There are a bunch of guys who averaged near 120 pitches per game last year (Sabby, Verlander, Lincecum off the top of my head). It seems to me that it's dependent on the pitcher, the situation and the manager.
  5. While i agree with the fact that Crawford was never a fit for other reasons than the ones mentioned above, isn't it possible that they were trying to add speed to an otherwise slow team by bringing him on board? And how does anyone know why Ellsbury stopped running? As far as i'm concerned, he always had the green light.
  6. Question: How does anyone here know better than everyone working on MLB how many pitches should pitches throw? Not meant as a slight, but i'd like to know the actual theory behind why every MLB team is wrong about having pitch counts.
  7. It's a bad omen for the Rangers that their BP has shown so many cracks tonight.
  8. Who is Karim Garcia?
  9. Equating real-life chemistry to a subjective concept which may or may not have been an actual problem. I see what you did there. So because i'm new i can't call out stupid when i see it?
  10. That's just silly. No GM operates looking at team chemistry as anything more than a secondary issue. As Joe Torre taught us while he was with the Yankees, it's up to the manager to control the team and maintain their chemistry. Sure, some guys are harder to deal with than others, and you need stand-up guys in the clubhouse, but you hear none of this mumbo-jumbo about things like chemistry when a team is winning. Epstein was neither overrated nor underrated, but he was polarizing. He was worshiped by the fan-boys, but unjustly hated and criticized by the obsessed and the irrational, which yourself and the guy you quoted seem to be. There was no middle ground.
  11. I'm going to admit my ignorance because i haven't been overly exposed to the Boston media, but why is this such a big deal? Sounds like a non-committal type of answer, which imo is the right choice given the current set of circumstances. Can someone enlighten me?
  12. The differences in WAR calculations between FanGraphs stem not only from the use of a different formula, but from the use of a different "scale" to measure both replacement level and the average amount of WAR per team. But in this particular instance, i believe that the problems with comparing Lackey to Aceves is both WAR's overvaluing the amount of IP, whilst undervaluing what we could call effectiveness. In other words, WAR for pitchers is likely to value the amount of innings pitched over how effective the pitcher was while on the mound to account for both sample issues and realistic impact on the game by number of innings, but that leaves us with the inability to realistically compare a really crappy starter to a really good middle reliever without feeling unsatisfied with the result to a certain extent. WAR is a flawed statistic in several aspects, although i will admit it is very useful in most circumstances. In the case of Aceves specifically, his peripherals would suggest he pitched way over his head even without the use of advanced statistics, which may also be a factor in why the WAR statistic points him out as having been an inferior value to Lackey even if the results argue otherwise.
  13. I don't really understand the hate for Sweet Caroline. It's a fun thing if you ask me.
  14. If someone told me in July that this all would have happened, my head would have exploded.
  15. I wish it wasn't too late to get Ozzie Guillen. I don't even think he's a good manager, but he's hilarious.
  16. Someone PM me this picture...must...see
  17. Who does everyone want to see in, then?
  18. We seriously need to learn to stop giving up runs so early...
  19. Can we win again now please?
  20. On a serious note, I always wear a fitted whenever I'm wearing something navy, red, white, or something that doesn't look stupid with a navy hat, and I have many shirts and jerseys. I don't wear them out to parties or anything, but I usually put one on when watching games, or otherwise I'll just wear them around or to class or something. I even have quite a collection which have no sleeves; they're all older and too big though from when I was heavier, so I just wear those shirts to the gym, they're perfect for that.
  21. Que tiempo pasa hoy?
  22. On paper, tonight could be a difficult night for the Yankees. It would be a nice opportunity to gain a game.
  23. I don't know how I'll be able to sleep either. I can't believe that game started at 8:10. I felt like it started it like noon and just finished.
  24. You'd better let them know then, they're well on the way to winning their 4th straight SPL title...
