  1. Drew pinch hitting for Bill Hall.
  2. Alright Ortiz! Let's get something out of this
  3. Not very good calls against Kalish. Those pitches were definitely off the plate.
  4. Doubront and Atchison in the pen. Maybe we might not need 6 runs...
  5. He might come back for the 6th, but I doubt it. However, Tito's probably gonna send out Lackey for another inning.
  6. Man, I miss that Mark Prior-Kerry Wood 1-2. That tandem was devastating. But then, Dusty Baker happened.
  7. Well, the problem is that the average ERA is about 4.5, which is what you get if you pitch 6 innings and give up 3 runs.
  8. I never thought Lackey was a very good pitcher. Never liked the signing.
  9. Who does Bill Hall think he is, Darnell McDonald?
  10. Lost velocity from injuries. I think he's had more problems than just velocity, but I'm not sure.
  11. Here's a midseason article from one of the people who vote on the Cy Young: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/jon_heyman/07/12/midseason.awards/index.html I think he's a middle-of-the-pack voter: Throws out numbers like WHIP, but also thinks Price is the best pitcher because he's "giving Tampa the ace it needs." Also thinks Wright should get the MVP because he had one more RBI than Pujols. And this gem: "Josh Johnson, Marlins. With the best WHIP (0.96) and ERA (1.70), he's certainly made it a race. His 9-3 record isn't bad, but some folks (including myself) count the record, especially when another guy is a ridiculous 15-1." IMO, it seems like voters have shifted their views where W-L isn't the only stat they look at, but they still give it way too much credit.
  12. Formula's very good at predicting who wins it. The winner has been in the top 3 the past few years. It's not very good at predicting where people finish after, and I think the formula probably overvalues closers. The Cy Young typically goes to the best pitcher, but where people finish after the winner usually turns out to be a crapshoot. I think Lee may be off it because he switched teams, but that's just a hunch.
  13. I believe that part of the reason the Red Sox started him in AA perhaps earlier than he was ready for was that they wanted to challenge their prospects more. They were concerned about how Buchholz had never faced any real adversity until he got to the MLB level, and then had to go back down to AAA to deal with it. It seems like the past few years the Sox have been pushing their prospects to more advanced levels before they've been fully prepared.
  14. .280/.371/.492 home, .263/.362/.463 away. Not a terrible big difference, especially since a lot of hit better at home than away, even in pitcher's parks.
  15. By "make-or-break", I mean Reddick needs to consistently perform at AAA to have a shot at making the team in 2012. I wonder if we could keep Lowell one more year at first, and play VMart there often. There aren't many long-term solutions at 1B/3B, and none better than Pujols/Fielder/Gonzalez in 2012. Lowell's looked good at first, and he still hits well; it's a question of whether his health can hold up.
  16. Cliff Lee's W/L is worse than both Price and Lester. I think that Lee has been the best pitcher in the AL.
  17. s*** happens. Remember when Carpenter was left off two ballots entirely last year? And Wainwright had more 1st place votes, and finished 3rd?
  18. Bowden needs to be on a very short leash tonight.
  19. I read an article from one of the people who votes, who said (around the ASB I think) that he'd still vote for Ubaldo in the NL, despite his recent craptacular performances (at the time), and the fact that other pitchers were pitching better than him overall. I'm not sure recent performances help/hurt a Cy Young cause very drastically. Let's hope we can make something of Lowell's double. I don't feel safe with Bowden on the mound.
  20. Bard was up in the pen, but that was when Doubront had two runners on. I wouldn't expect to see Bard pitching the 9th, but he'll probably be warming quickly if whoever starts the 9th gets into trouble.
