  1. Mauer didn't hit for as much power as Vmart and Posada do. The power numbers of his MVP season were definitely an aberration. His numbers are not similar to VMart and Posada's, his price tag is higher because of youth, defense, and probably partly because of his monster MVP season. He's probably the best catcher in the game now, but IMO he's overpaid and won't be the best catcher ever (see Pudge Rodriguez). Howard is badly overpaid. I guess, now that I think about it, his contract would actually be similar to A-Gon and Fielder's, but if Fielder were 5 years older than he is now then he shouldn't be getting the same contract that Howard got.

  3. No way the Sox are getting a new park.
  4. This. Nice group of pitchers, Posey is great, Sandoval was overrated after last season. I don't really know how their offense manages to get production from Aubrey Huff and Juan Uribe. That pitching staff is really scary though.
  5. I was hoping for Percy Harvin or Sidney Rice, with the assumption that the Vikings had a deal already in place. I guess Moss was a lot more disgruntled than Belichick was letting on.
  6. I guess he's entitled to his opinion. It won't make me a Liverpool fan, though.
  7. I decided to be an Arsenal fan after I got into soccer, cause they play really pretty soccer (sorry, we have the better football) and because they don't buy their entire roster like a lot of other sports teams (Man City, Barca, Real Madrid, New York Yankees) do. Wenger is the manager of Arsenal. He gets a reputation as a whiner, because he usually complains that his players are getting attacked by thugs on the pitch (which has some merit, but he does complain a bit excessively). The Champions League is a competition of the best soccer clubs in Europe, based upon how they finished in their league the previous year and how good their league is.
  8. I think the rotation's fine. Beckett and Lackey had down years, and I'd expect Dice-K is where he is talent-wise. Even if a starter misses extended time (which is likely), I'd imagine the FO has a lot of confidence in Doubront, Bowden would be fine as a spot starter and Tazawa's going to be ready by spring training. Fixing the bullpen should be the number one concern, I think Theo would cringe at shelling out $5 million a year just for a spot starter (unless he moves Dice-K).
  9. Awesome, I guess I'll tune in then.
  10. Get Werth (maybe), sign Beltre/Dunn or a stopgap, overhaul the bullpen. I think one of our outfielders have to go - maybe Drew or Cameron.
  11. I would, but I have a class at that time. Is there anywhere where it gets replayed?
  12. Picking up the one-year option, although at a higher price per year than a 2-year deal, would leave the Sox with the needed flexibility in the future. For example, the Sox could sign Dunn long-term, and move him to DH in a year if they acquire Gonzalez/Pujols (and probably keep him at first if they acquire Fielder - but I don't know how willing he is to accept a future like that). Or, they could sign Werth and a stop-gap at 1B/3B, and then move Werth to DH, Youk to third, fill in right with one of our emerging prospects, and pick up a 1B. Or slot an outfielder at DH and keep Werth in right, idk. Or, rotate V-Mart a substantial amount between C/DH in two years. Or trade for HanRam and put his glove at DH.
  13. I like Werth better. I don't like Aramis Ramirez or Millwood. I like Ortiz better than Fielder, but only because he's cheaper; I don't think that a mediocre year (from Fielder's perspective) or a good year for Ortiz (in his mid-30s, no less) represents how good they actually are. I was also mistaken about Dunn and Fielder's power - I swear my eyes said Fielder had a substantially higher ISO.
  14. He had similar velocity last year to when he played with the White Sox, and his White Sox days weren't particularly great. Add the fact that he's a fly-ball pitcher in Yankee Stadium, and well... Not that I think Melky Cabrera turned out great either. Both teams traded for players that had career years, and they paid for it.
  15. I guess it's kind of fitting that the Sox season ends with a walk-off walk. It seems like the kind of season we've had. Now all that I care about (in baseball, at least) is the Yankees losing six straight to end their season - 3 to the Sox, 3 to the Twins. Of course, if the Sox force a tie and win the playoff game to make it to the playoffs. I'd be pretty happy too.
  16. Dunn isn't going to DH. The fact that he's played average defense this season is only going to strengthen his hand on that point. The only problem with having both Dunn and Ortiz is that they're both left-handed (that, and neither are named Adrian Gonzalez, Price Fielder, or Albert Pujols). The most flexible option would be to sign a one-year stopgap at 1B, pick up Ortiz's option and let VMart go. Signing Beltre would make sense if the Sox were going to go after Fielder (a DH type), as Gonzalez and Pujols would probably make more given their defensive qualities.
  17. Speed isn't that big of a deal when one is a DH and one is a 1B. The number of times that Ortiz has gotten out because of his slowness can't be very many (when a faster person would have been safe).
  18. Adam Dunn said that he would be open to DHing for the rest of the season if he got traded at the trade deadline, not that he was looking to DH for a year (although I don't know if he's said anything new about being a DH, but I don't think he has). I wouldn't mind acquiring Dunn short-term to play 1B (seeing as his defense has been average this year, and this is the first season where he's had an entire offseason/year devoted to learning 1B ) but if he refuses to DH, acquiring him for 1B will block the acquisition of better 1B next year.
  19. http://soxblog.projo.com/2010/09/victor-martinez-12.html V-Mart turns down 2 year extension offer, but I don't think that's the end of it - the Sox will likely give him another offer. According to the article, V-Mart wasn't insulted by the offer at all.
  20. Not every gm is sabermetrically inclined - see Dan Haren trade. Re Jacko: Ortiz would be the one I take, because Drew is replaceable through the farm or FA and Drew is not.
