  1. He wasn't exactly chased off the Braves; being sent as one of the top prospects in the Mark Teixeira trade is a pretty high status. He was chased off the Rangers due to throwing concerns, which he's fixed in Boston. I don't think that he should be the starting catcher in 2011, but that doesn't mean that Salty will never deserve a spot with the Sox. He was one of the headliners in the Mark Teixeira trade for a reason.
  2. Jeter is not very good at all. Scutaro costs about $10 million less, and is pretty close in quality.
  3. I believe he had a shoulder injury, and was shut down for pretty much all of September.
  4. I think Ellsbury is still valued higher than Kalish, whatever his value now. If it were the difference between offering Ellsbury+Doubront rather than Kalish+Kelly, I'd rather deal Ellsbury. I've also read in a few places that the Dbacks seem to prefer Ellsbury to Kalish, given that Kalish is less proven. It sounds like the Sox are trying to involve a third or even fourth team at this point, so Papelbon (and, I suppose, a lot of other players) could be a potential moving parts.
  5. He wants major league ready players. No one is quite sure why. If there was any sort of player to trade Ellsbury for (a younger outfielder who is already very good and has much better potential), well, this would be it.
  6. He's in his second arbitration year.
  7. It's unlikely that the Sox acquire him, unless they're targetting Prince specifically as a DH and plan on putting Uggla at third. Or if Theo wants to put Pedroia at short and Uggla at second. I guess that's technically possible...
  8. I'm also curious to see what the Sox do with Okajima. He had a terrible first half, but also had a reasonably good second half. His control got better as the season went on, but it's probably a concern that he's displayed fly-ball tendencies for awhile now.
  9. Scott Atchison and Scott Schoeneweis were the only "scrap-heap" signings last season, and Schoeneweis was dumped pretty quickly when it wasn't working out - everyone outside of Ramon Ramirez had spent their entire careers with the Sox (except Okajima). Atchison worked out pretty well, as I remember. This is a no-risk, high-reward signing for the Sox. It costs them almost nothing to bring the lesser Buchholz in and give him a spot if he performs well in Spring Training or starts in AAA and does well.
  10. http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/mlb/news/story?id=5796794 Theo wants 1-2 relievers, is reluctant to lose picks for relievers, and wants Beltre and Martinez back (at least, this is what he says). I think the stuff about relievers is perhaps truer than the stuff he says about Beltre and VMart.
  11. http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/red-sox/post/_/id/6872/kalish-scores-big-in-james-forecast Bill James projects Kalish to have a line of .271 average, .340 on-base percentage, 20 home runs, 82 RBIs, .452 slugging percentage, .791 .OPS. Does he still work for the Sox? If he does, it could be a possible indication that the Sox are content to let Kalish run with it next year, although definitely not anything substantive.
  12. Not exactly great material. Either the Royals just looked at the ERA, or the prospect is really good. The return must be pretty good if the Royals were willing to trade him now, instead of waiting for his value to rise again.
  13. I'm not surprised anymore at how badly voters miss the mark on awards, regardless of which ones. At least the BBWAA have been making better decisions the past few years.
  14. Olivo's hit fine in the seasons where he didn't play in Colorado. He's also good defensively. Schneider would be the better option only if you are looking at a full-time platoon. I'd rather have Olivo than Buck though, given Buck is not great defensively and his offensive numbers aren't that much better than Olivo. Plus, Olivo passed a kidney stone during a game, then came back out to catch. That's pretty badass.
  15. Beltre reportedly wants 4 years and 60 million, which is probably too high for the Sox' liking.
  16. They'll get Dunn only if they offer a multiyear deal. I wonder if the Red Sox will get a good right-handed bat to platoon with Papi. I can't think of one in the system aside from Lowrie, but it's possible he gets a chance to start next year.
  17. The Jays acquired Olivo and declined his option, probably to offer him arbitration. He may accept, but they already have two catchers set for 2011 (Arencibia and Jose Molina) and another that they may offer arbitration to (John Buck). If the Sox can't get Martinez back for 3 years, I think they've made the right move.
  18. I still think that one year of ortiz is better than two cheaper years. Miguel olivo is on the market right now. Theo might target him; he hits for power and plays decent defense, but doesn't get on base much. He's a lower risk than salty, and would probably be very cheap.
  19. If the Royals aren't eating any of his contract, then I don't think it would cost the Sox 5 prospects. But I would guess that KC would be willing to eat a substantial amount of money to get better prospects, given that 1. It's how a lot of teams have been doing it recently, and 2. They're not going to be spending that money on much else.
  20. Think they have the parts not the will. They have 3.5 pitchers with ace ability (not sold on Lackey), and probably the best no. 5 pitcher in the MLB. I don't think Theo is unsettled enough with his staff to swap 3+ top prospects for Greinke.
  21. Mauer's wOBA (.382) is pretty close to VMart's (.360) and Posada's (.369). V-Mart suffered his two lowest wOBA marks in injury shortened seasons, so it's possible his mark could have been higher in healthy years. Overall, Mauer's power (.154 ISO career) is definitely not close to V-Mart's (.170) and Posada's (.203). So overall, Mauer is better offensively, but not by a whole lot. Most of that price tag is for defense and youth. If you think that's worth about $8 million extra, then I guess you would think that Mauer's worth his contract. I don't think that Mauer's contract would be indicative of the market.
