It tells us that a move to the pen didn't let his stuff play up right away. Maybe he'll get better over time, but he's not really a high caliber arm today. There was talk about him being pushed onto the Sox playoff roster last year. Clearly, that would have been a bad idea.

I agree. I think they should recognize if they are relievers or starters when they are in AAA and transition them then.

Perales will finally be out of options next season and his stat line after being called up this year isn't great. 7 IP, 9 ER, 3 HR, 10 H, 6 BB, 9 K, 11.57 ERA, 8.68 FIP

I think they keep them in the rotation longer so that they continue to throw their entire arsenal in game. However, if Phillips was to go to the pen, he wouldn't need 4 pitches. For example, Erik Miller went from being a good reliever with 4 pitches to a great reliever with 2 pitches.

Really rough year for him. Just didn't develop the way you'd like to see. Seems more and more relieverish to me.

Even if success rate is high, he is on the Luis Perales track. A starting pitcher from the DSL who hasn't thrown a lot of innings because he is constantly dealing with injuries. Maybe it's just one injury and the surgery fixes everything going forward? Hard to know. No matter what, he's rule 5 eligible next December and will still be a few years away from helping BOS. 27 IP '23 (DSL) 63 IP '24 38 IP '25 9 IP '26

I disagree. He was one of the worst 3b in the league when he was there. He seems adequate at 1b. If you'd like to explain FRV to me and how it's calculated, I'm all ears.

Not many FA options available. Seiya Suzuki could be an upgrade in LF. Good pull heavy guy and a patient approach.

He was a top 10 1b per DRS. His -2 OAA was the same as Freddie Freeman. HIs numbers are similar to Pete Alonso (dWAR) and people were happy to sign him to 1b here. It's really hard for me to parse out how these defensive metrics are calculated so it just seems like you're either very good like Ty France and Matt Olson, very bad like Bryce Harper and Spencer Torkelson or somewhere in between. Devers is in between.

Delzine may be the only real upside guy left without knowing much about LaFavor. Valera is a big question mark at this point. Wehunt is fine as a depth piece. Not much to talk about with the rest of the pitching. Seems like back to square one.

If you take out Gasper's HRs, they fall to 17th. Not sure how much time he gets in the playoffs.

At times, he showed promise at 3b, but it got worse and worse for sure. He should be fine at 1b. His biggest problem at 3b always seemed to be his throws from what I remember.

Roman really has an all fields approach (close to league average pull/center/oppo). Wilyer is great at going oppo. Rafaela also has a heavy oppo approach, which isn't typically great for a RHB at Fenway, but he has a good line drive approach and it can work with that large OF.

Why feel bad about booing? His job is to catch the ball. If one of us fails to do our job correctly, we're open for criticism. There's a difference between booing and intentionally going after Duran in public because of his struggles. If we all went to a game together, I'm sure we'd all cheer for everyone on the team (excluding one or two posters of course). The only game I've ever been to where fans were really going after an opposing player was the day Brett Myers pitched after beating up his wife. I guess fans are just the commodity that owe Jarren Duran a living no matter if he can get a hit or not? Playing well is what he can do to entertain us. I truly don't care too much about the rest of it. However, when he keeps bringing everything upon himself (f slurs, going after fans, going after podcasters, his social media drama) he has shown no growth. He's 30. A large part of the reason that he hasn't been traded is that he's a toxic asset. Other teams don't want him because of what he brings to the table. I wish it wasn't the case. He's my son's favorite player. It's less about "mental health" and more about his behavior on the field. At this point, you can't write that stuff off anymore. Depression isn't a hall pass to get away with whatever you want.

Red Sox have been great playing away. Having a top 3 of Suarez/Gray/Tolle gives them as good a shot as any to go into the Bronx and win. They at least have a better shot than last year.

Back then, the award only went to a player if they won the pennant or came in 2nd. Willie got hosed by the voters in a few years even if you go by traditional stats.

Emulating Nico Hoerner May Be Nick Sogard's Best Path Forward

Hoerner's defense is plus plus. Sogard's is average to above average. For now, I'd take Hoerner on his current contract at 29. Once it bumps up to 23M next season at age 30? Much closer call especially if Hoerner's offense starts to fade. -
