  1. Meh, me no scanner, otherwise I like you guys so much I'd prolly post the entire article. I'll see if I can find some transcript though. The feature covers the quirks about Boston, stuff they dug up on the locals, so if a visitor goes there they know the lingo and the bars to hit, etc. Yeah, I glossed over the criteria, but the cities with pro-sports franchises obviously got the nod over the small little towns with maybe a collegiate team. Which is understandable looking at the whole of things, but I can tell you that college football towns - there's no way to describe how crazy it gets! JohnnyDug: I see that you live in the state of FL - didn't some politician call the Marlins "terrorists" for wanting a new stadium? I don't mean to imply that Floridians (?) don't like their sports or anything, but I thought that was a weird thing to say, to say the least.
  2. Hey chawalley, welcome to the board! Haven't been to SoSH, but the admin and mods here do a great job of making it a fun place to post and chat, and the trolls get served and smacked, but you don't need to worry about that. Enjoy your stay! Wait 'till he sees the phone bill on that.
  3. Got my issue of "Sporting News" today, the one with LT on the cover, and there's a feature on best sports cities in the nation (ranked from 1-388), and Boston comes in at number one. It's going to take me a couple of days to stomach this article, for obvious reasons, but it's a cool thing if you're a Red Sox fan, a New England sports fan for that matter (I think there are lots here?). Actually, St. Louis is ranked as the best MLB town, and Green Bay's the best in NFL, but in the overall standings, Boston's #1.
  4. Brief article on how the O's canceled the 3,000th celebration. Posted it in its entirety, but links still there in case y'all want to check out some of the sidebars. Palmeiro requested ceremony be canceled
  5. That's like a saves stat. And Cy Young's 511 wins might be in jeopardy.
  6. I like Aaron, and wish him all the best. Understand it was business, but nonetheless I was still a bit sad when he left. Oh but *I* hope so! Giambi is still streaking with those HRs. Edit: Didn't I learn about commenting about pitching while the game's in-process. Feel free to domianate again, Chacon!
  7. They exist. DJ bashers, they exist. 26 to 6 explained that Canseco said Jeter's the best player to not touch steriods. Has he heard of A-Rod, Pujols, Vlad, etc., I don't know... Edit: I can't detect sarcasm either. Meh?
  8. Aaron BLEEPING Boone has apparently been hitting close to, if not over, .400 against the Yanks in this series. Some ESPN stat. Wow, HR from Flaherty, surprising but not unwelcomed. Let's see if Chacon can follow up what Small did in his starts.
  9. He's not poor, soxie. Forty million, a guy is not poor. I once referred to KB as "poor thing", but then stopped, thought, and realized there were better words to describe what he has meant to this team... Update on Pavano's condition (rehab start): Pavano hurls six strong, Yanks wait & see Good thing there's word on Wright, too; I thought he simply vaporized or something. Aaron Sele...come on down! You're the latest DFA'd guy to [possibly] sign with the Yankees. One last thing about Pavano; look, given that this team has had its shares of prima donnas, I never had anything against Pavano in the first place. So if he helps his team into the postseason, I will root for him even more.
  10. Vous parlez francais? My French is rusty, but it should say "You speak French?". :dunno:
  11. No, I'm not surprised that the player requested anonymity. No one wants be named these days. I was joking about the phone rights part, but if he's calling his buddies up on the team phone during the game (not likely, if you didn't detect the sarcasm), then there'd be a problem. I have nothing against being friends with someone on another team, but IMO, and perhaps in the minds of other Yankee fans, he crossed the line and was unprofessional in talking about his team's situation. Frankly Pavano hasn't given enough this year to be happy or unhappy about "his" situation. RJ has griped. When he pitches well, I'll let it slide; when he doesn't, then he should shut up. As far as griping rights go, if the player pulls his weight and things aren't working, then he might have a legitimate case. I just don't see a point in this whole thing. What's done is done; he signed the contract, at his own discretion until some other breaking news story tells me he didn't. So anyways, I thought I'd mention this, in case Carl Pavano wants to make some friends with "True Yankees". Actually most of the article is about past Yankees, future Yankees, or somewhere in between. Some guys are meant to be Yankees and some are not Pedro? WHAT?! Well maybe Posada might actually get along with him better than say, RJ. And I don't want to get started on another round of debating, so I'll just say that the two have been civil about their lack of pitcher-catcher chemistry; RJ seems to be doing fine with Flaherty, and Posada well, this guy doesn't get called out in the NY media the way other "True Yankees" get called out (Jeter, Williams, Rodriguez - he's on the Yankee payroll, he's a Yankee). So just win and hopefully nobody will notice...
  12. Are you being sarcastic? I'm assuming you're speaking of the White Sox. Reason I say this is because many have speculated that BP is their main weakness, inexperience. I don't know, it just seems at times that they're this big mirage... soxie, you're so kind! Unless the Angels fade, fade fast. I was stunned when the Yanks managed to shake up their BP (thanks Toronto!), especially K-Rod. But realistically, I'm not counting on a signficant drop-off, so it has to be the Yankees being better, not the Angels getting worse. That walk-off play yesterday in the Phillies-Cubs game, oh, quite painful in the Cubs mental lapse. TAG HOMEPLATE! Or you also had a shot at third. Dusty's reaction during the late-inning antics have been quite humorous. Give the guy a break, already.
  13. They have Mora, Tejada and Roberts (one of the best DP combos), Byrnes has been hot upon arrival. B.J. Ryan's a solid closer. Starting pitching has been a concern. It's not like they're the D-Rays. Well, with the exception of Tampa Bay, Toronto and Baltimore make an effort. J.P. Riccardi seems like he's on to something in Toronto, in the long-run. Maybe if they weren't stuck in a division boasting the two teams with the highest payrolls in all of MLB, who are too absorbed in their own rivalry, they could compete regularly. I can see the frustration of fans of the other teams in the AL East (yeah, they exist). For their team to be atop the AL East standing, even for a little while, that's exciting! Well I would be exuberant if the Yankees regained the top.
  14. Be careful how you word that. But I got your point, noooo, no thanks on the RSN invasion.
  15. I see a merge-thread time! Well, it does show fans of the Orioles that their front office wants to compete? Tough division to do so. With Raffygate going on, maybe this move was also made in part to take some heat off that?
  16. Well this makes me think then that maybe there are more people out there who might know something about this issue, know a lot more perhaps, and maybe they just abided by the unwritten law that whatever goes on in the clubhouse, stays in the clubhouse. And to some people Canseco seemed like this guy who ran out of cash, sold out his teammates to rake in the dough. Maybe there's no "easy" way in basically ratting out your former teammates, but he hardly used any discretion, didn't seem to be much contrite, and c'mon, he hasn't made that much of an effort to "reform the league" or whatever. He's an outcast of MLB. I haven't seen him speaking to a group of kids that he regrets what he did. If he did, let me know, but he's too busy starring on the "Surreal Life", and I do not want to read about what goes on behind the scenes there.
  17. He's not a switch-pitcher, but Babe Ruth was a pitcher at one point. I say we insert him into the Yankees rotation. Before Stottlemyre messes up his mechanics. Now I remember that insurance commercial where Clemens and RJ morphed into one person, and the ball went through the wall. That's some heat!
  18. I'm going to put the Yankees in there. Umm. Because I can? And the Padres, c'mon, when Jake Peavy has to drive in a run for you...the division is practically THERE up for grabs, just take it already! Do NOT want to see Anaheim. Oakland's pitching staff scares me too. And yeah, the Red Sox still gives some Yankees and their fans night terrors I guess. I'm not quite sold on the White Sox. Baseball's a game about streaks and finding your stride at the right time. Oakland had young pitching (injuries and offensive hiccups), so Beane wasn't worried; they'd do better in the second-half with some experience. Washington was last, dead last, in MLB in runs scored. At some point that has to add up. Cardinals are IMO the best team for the postseason. They just need Walker, Rolen, and Sanders healthy, and they're set. Carpenter is healthy - NL Cy Young candidate that outdueled Willis, Pettitte, Oswalt. They have pitching!
  19. I think people don't like the manner in which Canseco conducted himself and presented the material. Just rubbed people the wrong way.
  20. I think the only reason for firing a coach/manager during the season is if you think you can still win with someone else steering the ship. And when I look at the O's I think the opportunity has passed, for this year at least. I know that a lot of people were surprised that Baltimore held onto first for as long as they did, and so even if they're in free fall now, I'm going to give that team their props.
  21. Yeah, that was my point; they can't single out Giambi and leave out everyone else; there has to be a standard. Correct my logic here too, but if he took powerful anabolic steroids, wouldn't that trigger something on his test results? And if the doctors didn't know it was steroids...there would be concern as to find the actual cause...and so they would conduct extra tests - and somewhere down the line they would find out the cause of his problems? :dunno: HELLO? PEOPLE?! He was on the brink of death! Well, if they told you you had a tumor, wouldn't you be pretty freaked? Whether or not it was related to steroids, would anyone, anyone with common sense, we're not talking about Einstein IQ here, do anything that has been proven to be hazardous to your health? Isn't the simplest doctor's advice is if you're doing something that's hurting you, just stop doing it? Plus I think Giambi has health consultants if he himself is not smart enough to string that together.
  22. Umm, I was referring to both sides. You did read the first part that Matsui was out? In the case that you meant just in general, yeah I've noticed that. We pretty much think the whole league's out to get us. *cries* Stop getting on Giambi! He's clean now! We can't get any calls, we can't win any awards...yup, don't expect much sympathy though. And just so you know, you're not going to find a self-pitying Yankee fan here.
  23. Well, they could screen for it if they wanted to? Problem arises in if Giambi should be singled out for that?
  24. Update on the team 216 miles away...Matsui was out. Originally I thought he was out by a mile, but it was his foot not touching the bag - he was still out. Moose, can't you pitch with the lead?? Two errors. Yeesh. Bad umpire night, bad bad night.
  25. Not sure if I understand this correctly; as in the lefty and righty specialists are on the field at the same time; only one is actually pitching and the other is over at 1B. So then they could do a switcharoo? That might be a more plausible idea. I'll look up pitching substitution rules sometime, when I don't feel so lazy. Btw, I was originally referring about one starting pitcher who's ambidextrous. Expecting much?
