I think had he stayed in the Yankees system he could have developed quietly like Posada did, but in theDodgers system I dont think he will turn out to be much. Eventually he will be their regular catcher, but i see him as one of those guys who ends up bouncing around from team to team throughout his big league career (which i dont expect to be that long). But definately, had we kept him he would have become something, hes one of those guys that was enamored with the fact that they were Yankees and had the opprotunity to be in the Bronx playing for the big club, thats what motivated and drove him, the pride he had for the Yankees. But hey, i could be wrong, hopegully he becomes a great catcher..but i highly doubt it now.
As for a lefty, i think that if we get all of our starters back (Pavano, Wright, Wang, Brown, etc..) and healthy, that Leiter might be thrown out into the pen (you gotta think that Pavano and Wang wont go out there, Chacon will probably be forced out ther), though I think that Brown should be the one in the pen an Leiter the one in the rotation.
Right now we got
Moose
Randy
Small
Leiter
Chacon
*Pavano
*Wright
*Wang
*Brown
*Nomo
*Mendoza
Rodriguez
Groom
Graman
Proctor
Sturtze
Gordon
Mo
There are 6 pitchers there with asterisks next to their name, which mean that they are injured (or in Nomo's case "sharpening up") and expected to come back sometime this year (Wang will most likely be back, will start throwing Monday).
That means 6 spots need to be emptied for them to make room on the 25 man roster, though if you assume Wang and Mendoza wont be back until September, they can just be added when the rosters expand to 40. I think the Yanks will do the same with Wright, he will be capable to come back prior to September but it would make more sense to leave him onthe DL until September 1st so that he could be activated when the rosters expand as well. So lets subtract those 3, which leaves 3 roster spots that need to be vacated for Pavano, Brown, and Nomo. Groom i think will be DFA, and Proctor and Graman have options, so they can be sent down without risking them to waivers, which take care of the 3 spots. Now I believe that since the Yanks now have a free spot on the 40 man roster (they traded Sierra and Ramirez, both of whom were on the 40 man roster, for Chacon, which leaves one spot on the 40 man roster) they should promote Mendoza then classify him as being on the 60 Man DL, which would make him eligible for the postseason if the Yanks choose to use him under the circumstances that he has a stellar September. (to be eligible for the postseason roster, you need to be on the 25 man roster on August 31st, or on either the 15 day DL or the 60 day DL on August 31st, which would make all 6 pitchers with asterisks eligible for the postseason...In Mendoza's case, he would have to go through the process of having his Minor League contract purchased by the Yankees, which would add him to the 40 man roster, [which we should do now that we have a free spot] and then put him on the 60 day DL, which would take him off the 40 man roster, but still be listed as a Major Leager, then we could use his 40 man roster spot for Nomo. Cashman needs to do this process ASAP for it to have an effect). So now that ive probably confused everyone, let me summarize by saying that if we need a lefty in the pen it will likely be Leiter, as RJ, Moose, Pavano, Brown and either Nomo or Small will fill the starting rotation (Leiter could be in the rotation and have Nomo and Small in the pen, but that would leave us with NO lefties out there, as Graman would be optioned down and Groom would be DFA). But to shake thing up even worse, Dennys Reyes (who was released by the Padres monday, and is a lefty) was, last I heard, deciding between the Yankees, Astros, and a third team (possibly the Cardinals I believe) to sign with. He would just add to the surplux of pitching we already have, and I cant even begin to take the time out and try to analyze what moves would be made to accomodate him as well as the pitchers with the asterisks I listed above. Now let me remind you that it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that Joe Torre would carry mnore than 12 pitchers on the 25 man roster at any given time between now and August 31st. (I say no more than 12 because if he had 13 he would not have many position players eligible for the postseason, as the 13th pitcher would be taking a position players spot). So basically what im saying is that unless we start trading off these injured guys, or some guys in the pen, we cant afford to go otu and make any improvements to the rotation or bullpen, due to the fact that we are overstocked in the pitching department. So since we cant make additions (unless it is ruled that either Brown, Pavano, Wright, or Wang is out for the entire year), we will have to make it work with the pitchers under contract right now. Which may be tough. Now realize that I am not Brian Cashman so therefore he may still make an addition to the pitching staff, and figure out what to do from there (it would be VERY tough), but it is unlikely and would be a difficult task.
OK guys, i realize that i just wrote a novel, and that probably none of you read it all in its full, but if you want your Yankees pitching questions answered, then read everything i just wrote.
