If SF could take it back, I'm fairly sure they would.  Devers is notoriously streaky, but in his last 19 games, he has an awful, awful 28/2 K/W with 1 HR.  2nd worse fWAR right now, out of 182 qualified.

To be fair to Devers, he started out like that in Boston last year before morphing into Jimmie Foxx 2.0....

Probably like $50-60mill over the last 10 years.   Not enough to get the meaningful players the Sox could use.   If they didn't gamble on Sandoval and Kluber and Richard, etic, FSG would just have a bigger bottom line.

Or maybe they could extend some of the younger players.  Maybe...

The theory is you get a better pitcher at $50M/5 than signing five 1 year players at $10M a pop.

We really cannot count Giolito as an injured/rehabbing pitcher signed: he got hurt after the signing. Without him, the cost has been... (way more than $50-60M)

Last 8 years:

$145M/5 Sale (we all know his record of missed starts)

$68M/4 Nate (started  2/3rd of his games: 74 out of a possible 112 games)

$21M/1 Buehler

$18M/2 Sandoval

$11M/2 Perez

$10M/1 Richards

$10M/1 Kluber

$10M Paxton

$10M/2 Hendriks

$7M Wacha (did fine when he started)

$5M Hill

Interesting, because instability is the problem I sense. How can talent be judged if the talent isnt somewhat relaxed?

Agreed. I don’t think  Breslow is going anywhere. At least for 26-27. This Owner has got a bad rep amongst front office personnel around the league. Some Players as well. Watching what happened to Devers and having the policy of not giving a player a NTC is more of a deterrent.
I just read where Contreras said the clubhouse is more relaxed and less on edge with Tracey in and Cora out. Which is good. But they’ve still been 500 since. That’s what this team is and has been for the last few years. I love where the starting pitching is headed, but the offense is streaky and mediocre. All lifetime BAs of around 250-265. Not one bat you fear. Relying on a LOT of young ball players is risky.
the plan of loading up on pitching and the program they’ve put together seems to be working for the most part. The Problem is you have to pay for the big bats in this league or trade for them with young arms or draft them. Besides a young undeveloped Justin Gonzales, we don’t have much. Since Henry won’t open the wallet we’re gonna have to find some short term(2-3 year) like they tried with Alonso, or pick off someone’s else’s cost controlled big bat.

which brings me to the question of early trade proposals. Too early? Do we think this team is good enough to beat the best teams in consecutive series? Not so far. They would have to go about 600 the rest of the way just to get to where they were last year. With that said…Aroldis Chapman, with an option that vests at 40ip for next year could bring that bat back.
Overall, ownership needs to start treating their front office personnel and players like humans. NYY are a good model for that consistency. Like them or hate them, they spend most of their team earnings back into the team and don’t fire their GMs and change philosophy every few years. They may make a bad deal or two but that’s the name of the game if you want to be at the top of this game.

Chapman's option is mutual. He may want to test the market for one final payday.

He may have high value even as a 2-3 month rental.

Closers like him always do! There was a lot of talk about trading him last year too.

I also think Gray can bring back nice value, assuming he's healthy and still pitching well.

Maybe we should trade them, now!

Maybe? I wonder what point it will be that they start selling off parts. Do they think they still have shot to stay in it because they are only X games out right now. "Well, if these guys only play to their POTENTIAL..."

I heard on Section10 that if the Sox were just an average offense that they'd have the best record in the AL. Haven't been able to find the backup for that yet.
