The only everyday players who loses team control before 3 years are Bregman (opt outs after 2025 & 2026) and Refsnyder (after 2025.) While Ref is a valuable batter vs LHPs, his defense is not good. We have Anthony in the wings, which should be an upgrade. (JH Garcia may be in the picture by 2026.) Losing Bregman will hurt, and we should not think about moving Devers back to 3B. Bt the time Bregman leaves, we may very well have an in-house solution as we decide who best can play SS, 2B and 3B among Story, Campbell, Mayer and subs like DHam, Romy & Grissom. (Arias and Romero may be knocking on the door by 2026 and 2027.)

Yoshida has 3 years, too, but he lacks a clear roster slot, going forward, especially if Devers stays at DH.

It would be nice to extend Crochet but the management appears to be lasered focused on developing pitching talent. I like the direction we're headed.

I totally agree, and while I'd like to lock some of these guys up for longer terms, I can understand the hesitancy to do so, when pitchers get hurt so often.

Our highest contracts to pitchers have been:

$210M/7 Price

$145M/5 Sale (extension)

$82.5M/5 Lackey (figure in inflation)

$68M/4 Nate

$52M/6 Dice-K (plus $52M posting fee- figure in inflation)

Brez & Co. have made strong efforts to improve the quality and quantity of drafting and IFA pitching additions. They have tried to improve development systems. They have also acquired many pitching prospects via trade and Rule 5, while also adding several vets with skills or past success.

The Athletic predicted Crochet at 110/5 (22m AAV). That would be a steal at the moment. Would love to see that get done now, honestly would overpay right now. A full, healthy, 30 start 190ish inning season probably puts him higher than deals that Burnes (210/6) and Fried (218/8) got this offseason. Wouldn't be opposed to giving him a deal like Sale (maybe even a little higher).

$150/5 would be adding 3 years, at about $38-40M a year, assuming he'd het $30-35M for his 2 arb years, combined.

i'd honestly take him on that. Worst-case it plays out like the end of Sale's contract, best case we get a cy-young pitcher in his prime years while Mayer, Anthony, Campbell, etc are all still under team control and cheap

I think he might take $140M/5. I think I'd do that, and cross my fingers.

Bergman at 3B and story at SS and Campbell at 2B, and Hamilton and sogard/romy in reseverse!
if Mayer exceeds expectations in Worcester, do we have a path to bring him up and get him plenty of at bats?????

The path is Story to the IL.

Another could be Campbell to LF & trade Abreu, but we also have Anthony looking for a path (Rafaela to utility?)

I doubt we trade Story.

Someone will underperform or get injured. If Mayer is just in AAA for an extra few months because the lineup is cranking, who cares?

I doubt anyone would want story tbh. Saw some mocks floating a package centered around Wilyer for Alcantara, would do that in a heartbeat.

The idea might be to trade him for someone in a similar situation as Story but at another position. I'm not expecting to get much in return, and adding a good prospect to sweeten the return has downfalls to it, too.

I do think getting a guy like Murphy, who plays a position we need an upgrade at might be the push this team needs to get us in the conversation.

So much for Jh Garcia being handed a 1Bman's mitt.

Either trade bait or going to be given Refsnyder's roster spot next season.
