Is there any chance this would go through?  And why would the three teams with the most successful media model want to give that up to join clubs that do not have that?

Not a sports economist.  Will this have any implications down the road for RS?

It's going to be a REALLY ugly negotiating period for the next CBA. For the first time in awhile, there is going to be dissension in the owners' ranks. And I have no idea where that will lead.

For the good of the game, television revenue disparity is going to have to be addressed. I don't think an NFL-style pool is the answer but we can't have the Dodgers making $250m a season while the Padres are making $12m a season and playing in the same division. Some kind of balance will need to be struck and I have almost no faith in MLB owners doing something that doesn't serve their immediate, here-and-now interests.

There would have to be some substantial concessions to the Red Sox and the other teams with their own networks in order to give up their assets. Increased merchandise %? An MLB package without the Sox and Yankees is not very appealing to a lot of folks. I also worry what this could do to the overall presentation of each baseball game. Would the Red Sox lose their local flavor? If you watch Bally's telecasts, they just aren't the same.

why is the NFL style not the answer? i think the NFL is very fair and, like it or not, has increased parity to levels never seen in MLB. though i understand why big market teams would not like such a plan and i do think it would hurt the Sox, it would be fair to all teams.

Because some teams are just more popular with larger, more dedicated markets. I think there needs to be more balance but pure, 100% balance isn't the answer. Why should a team like the Diamondbacks - a team that generally underperforms both in television and attendance - receive the same amount as the Cubs, who have an enormous, dedicated fanbase?

17 regular season games per year vs 162 regular season games per year. MLB is more analogous to the NBA or NHL tv models due to the length of season. MLB is known to really step in it and some of the bigger market teams have rolled over for the small market teams in the past. Changing their revenue streams may make it a bigger fight though. Why piss off the richest owners and more loyal fanbases?

oh i get it, i totally get it.  there is just something about the huge gap in revenue that seems unfair to the game itself.  and certainly, i don't think owners that don't spend money should be given more, to not spend. a payroll floor would have to go with any type of tv "revenue sharing" plan IMHO.

MLBPA will not agree to a payroll cap and the smol bean owners won't agree to a payroll floor. The economics of baseball are dumb. The teams closest to me are the Marlins and the Rays and they don't really have a foothold on anyone. People blame transplants, but the Heat, Lightning, Bucs and Dolphins do just fine and are far all more popular than the two MLB teams.

i'm not surprised. and think this is on MLB for their marketing plan. i watch far more NFL games (for free!) than MLB games. it's almost like MLB doesn't want anyone watching their games. and maybe i'm wrong, but MLB popularity seems to be gradually sinking ito the abyss.
