The team needed to add a reliable reliever coming out of the break, with the injuries and Kenley unavailable for this series.

They rolled the dice, and they have been well and truly bent over.

Why bother? They should be SELLING relievers

While I don't disagree, how many meaningful trades have gone down in June and July, so far? Teams are waiting for desperation to set in, and some teams are have not been sure they are sellers, yet.

It's not easy getting significant talent once the season starts until a few days before the deadline.

But why not use some of the arms you have?

Horn and Anderson each day unused for more than 10 days. Alex Speas hasn’t been touched since he was claimed. What’s the deal with Keller and Walter still taking up 40 man roster spots? And then there’s Mata…

Agree. The mistakes came before the season started. Breslow focused almost exclusively on the rotation--and screwed that up completely--and did little for the bullpen. He also got a decent righty bat, which we now see was not enough.

Everyone's in an uproar about the 11th biggest payroll ($182M), which is in fact the lowest ranked payroll in the John Henry era. But we see now that, had Breslow been smarter and not committed $38M for Giolito, to say nothing of $17M so Sale could become the ace for the Braves, there was in fact enough money to improve the Sox. It was just misspent.

It is no small irony that in return for the outrageous deal with the Braves, who basically have a no-cost ace, the Sox have Grissom, who is unavailable and probably not needed this year.

Yahoo recently listed 3 players the Sox have been linked to and, spoiler alert, nothing new.

The players are Paxton, Taillon and Rengifo.

The inclusion of Taillon is confusing since Hoyer was recently quoted as saying the Cubs goal is “2025 and beyond”, and with Taillon under team control through 2026, he should be part of that, especially considering pitching is the top 9 items and Hoyer’s top ten needs list. And item 10 is only slightly different, reading “and more pitching”.

Rengifo was having great season when his wrist became inflamed in early July and he went on the 10 day list. Still there . Wrist injuries or even inflammation indicates a situation where swing the bat could be problematic, or it become chronic for the rest of the season. It would be a dice roll if Luis could be a big help to the Sox or not.
