Valdez below average bat does not make up for his bush league fielding .

He should not be starting on this team

I don't think it was intended for Valdez to be a starting regular, except maybe at Worcester. But somehow, Chris Sale got traded for Vaughn" Noshow" Gruessom, leading to Enmanuel's emancipation. I hope somebody gets the story on Hamilton. Got to be something wrong there

it's little league and Cora has to play everybody whether they suck or not.

Not true. One reason for Valdez might be that Hamilton played 12 innings yesterday. So did Rafaela, but he's the best available defensive SS.

A fair point, but Houck finished with 1 K and 4 BB's. In the same 4 innings, Cortes has 5 K's and 1 BB. Houck was seriously outpitched.

Valdez, agreed, was just awful. He was not hurried and was fully set before throwing.

Max, It seems that Sox pitchers have fallen into a groove that when things get a little bit away from them, it all goes haywire and they have trouble adjusting. Not just the DP error, but as you point out, poor control by Houck set it up while Cortes cruised beffore and after the rain delay

most all the rest of the team played 12 yesterday. is Hamilton the only one among them incapable of playing 12 one day and then starting the next day?

It might be a "groove," but tonight I think Houck, Valdez, and the Sox no-name lineup just might be intimidated by Yankees Stadium and the crowd. Also got to give credit to Cortes with 8 K's, 1 BB, 3 hits, and 1 run in 6 innings.

Both rightfielders, ours and theirs, had to run extra long and almost misjudged distances to catch high flies that drifted from right to left (as we look at the field). Maybe a wind is blowing that way which maybe helps left pitchers. Horn just pitches 2.2 scoreless with 3 K's and 0 BB's and 0 runs.

That was one terrific changeup by the Yankees reliever Weaver, who also made a terrific play on an excellent bunt by Gonzalez.

Unless Hamilton was unable to play tonight, it makes zero sense. I've stopped trying to enter Cora's mind.

But considering everything bad that's happened to the SOX so far this season, it is a minor miracle where they are in the standings.

Just don’t give us false hope. I don’t like this crap when they pulled you in just to stink again.

They're 14 -5 in their last 19 games. The Yankems are 5-14 in their last 19 games.

Its pretty amazing what the modern day starter cannot tolerate. Rain delays were once just rain delays. Now, the starter is shot and its not just the Sox starters.

All over the league, managers are trying to add days of rest between starts for most starters. First the number of complete games dropped. Then guys were going 5 and maybe 6 if lucky. Now they can go 5-6 for half a year. But of course advanced stats say get your spin rate rip as if that does not tax pitchers more.

Not true. Rain delays have always been problematic for pitchers. The longer a rain delay goes, the worse it is.

Houck was not sharp tonight, but he still should have been out of the inning allowing only 1 run

After 7 innings, this game is tied, 1-1, but for Valdez's really awful error.

Of course, the Sox pitching should get no credit because the Yankees are just another AAAA team that can't hit a lick. That's the new rule, isn't it? Never, ever give a Sox pitcher any credit.

True, but there's no hiding a bad defense.

It’s crazy how they struggle against these soft tossers.

Showing that velocity isn’t everything. Cortes is a pitcher, not a thrower. He’s got 4 pitches, hits the edges, doesn’t walk a lot of people and moves the ball around. One pitch often sets up another.
