Speaking of stupid, that's how Rafaela looked in his latest at bat. Three called strikes for the K.

And yet he leads this team in RBI. That should have given us a hint that reality was gonna show up sooner rather than later and here we are.

Actually, I like Rafaela. I'm just pissed off about the game and especially Mr Stupid McGuire.

So tonight's Twins' starter is the weakest of the three. "How does that grab ya, darling? How does that mess your mind? How does that grab ya, darling? We're leaving .500 far behind."

Apologies to Nancy Sinatra.

Earl had some power at the plate also. I saw him hit a couple of balls out by the monuments at the old Yankem stadium.

He did indeed! But not as much as my favorite pitcher, Jerry Casales. (And didn't the weak-hitting Raddatz even hit one? or maybe what I'm recalling is he once incredibly hit a ball off the wall?)

(I had forgotten about Brewer's pinch-running: I'm amazed that I could even come up with the name.)

At least tomorrow's game is at 2:10, so it won't conflict with me watching the choking BRUINS tomorrow night.

The Bruins have crapped their pants twice. If they do it again tonight they are in the crapper for good.🤭🙈🤫

I'm pretty sure he was checking for a foreign substance on his throwing hand.

Earl pitched the first game I ever saw at Fenway, which I believe was 1965, and hit a HR his first time up as did Yaz.

McGuire is an idiot. First he gambles on a very tough play, one that is clearly not part of his repertoire, and brings home the 2d Twins run without getting an out. Then he does his best to screw up Uwasawa's concentration by first insisting his glove is broken and second by going out to the mound to talk gibberish--I'm positive he is not fluent in Japanese--to Uwasawa and throw him even further off.

moonslav's CERA stats are complete bs. Wong is a much better catcher than McGuire.

Uwasawa speaks English…

Both Wong and McGuire have some specific areas of need on D, and they are not the same.

That does not make large and balance sample sizes of CERA BS. Ask most pitchers, if they prefer to pitch to one guy over another.

Last year the early overall CERA numbers favored Wong, but when you broke it down by pitcher, and only compared those with somewhat large and balanced sample sizes, the margin was not so great. This year, the sample sizes are too small, but McGuire seemed to have evened things up.

I'm not even going to look, until half the season is over, but they do seem to be balancing the load more, this year.

They both have had their hot streaks at bat, but Wong is doing much better there.

I'm glad we have both of them, despite the big mistake by McGuire, last night.

Really? According to his bio, he's lived in Japan his entire life until last year or this year. Of course, nothing would have prevented him from learning English in Japan, but reportedly it's very difficult to learn English if you grow up Japanese.

Anyway, I believe you. However, I still don't think McGuire's trip to the mound helped. Nor did his errant throw to center field.

Agree both are assets. I prefer Wong because he's obviously a better athlete.

I found it in interview someone did with his agent, a guy named Mike Seal…

The 2024 sample sizes are small, but here are some defensive numbers:

DRS

-1 Wong in 162 innings (30th out of 44 catchers with 100+ innings) 22 out of 33 with 130+ innings

-2 McGuire in 135 innings (34th out of 44 and 25th out of 33.)

Some metrics show McGuire is better at pitch framing than Wong.

Wong has better pop times on SB attempts.

McGuire is better at blocking bad pitches.

We've cycled through so many pitchers on this team since McGuire joined the team in 2022, that there are not many balanced AND large enough sample sizes to get a good read on who gets the most from our pitchers, one-by-one.

Everything I've read on him says he speaks English. I don't see why that would be unusual. I also read that English is a compulsory subject from grammar school through the university in Japan (i.e., a student in Japan likely gets more training in English than students in the US).
