Baseball, as we know, is the sport of heaven. Other sports are not as good, and here is how I would change them.

Basketball: The interminable series of fouls and free throws makes the end of basketball games ugly and boring. I was trying to watch the end of the NC State vs. Marquette game and almost died of boredom. It must have taken half an hour to play the last three minutes of the game. Fouls in the last minute or two of the game should result in free throws plus possession of the ball for the team that gets fouled.

Soccer: I normally work in a country where soccer is king, so I have to at least pretend to like it. But flopping is awful and really detracts from any enjoyment one might otherwise draw from the game. Every match should be automatically reviewed by a video ref after the match is over, with sanctions imposed for flops. Bad flops earn a yellow card, meaning that the flopper starts the next game sitting on yellow. Really bad flops get a red card, meaning the flopper is suspended from the next game. That would end flopping in a heartbeat.

Any other ideas?

EDIT: What I would also change is not having a typo in the thread title.

Basketball: How about changing a foul lets the team shoot 1 FT and get the ball back?

Soccer: make the goal bigger by 2 feet up and 2 feet on both sides.

Football: stop treating the QB like a china doll.

How's that going to make football better?

You'll have fewer penalties but more injuries. And there are plenty injuries already.

It's turned into flag FB for the QB.

FB is not for pansies.

Have to agree to disagree on that one. I still see QB's taking plenty of physical abuse, and they are the star attraction, so it's not surprising they get some extra protection.

I'm not surprised, either, and I get why they try to protect QBs, but the game is not the same.

It's also a game that's already under fire for the number of life-altering, life expectancy-reducing injuries sustained by players.

Frankly it's a game that's too violent for the human body. Much like pitching is now too stressful for the human arm.

No real solutions for these problems.

Baseball could go back to pre-1884 rules where the pitcher threw underhand to a location the batter specified. Back then, his role wasn’t to get hitters out but rather to get each player started.

That would all but eliminate TJ surgery for pitchers…

If the NFL wants to get more exciting, do the following.

1. No more PATs. Waste of time. Consider it automatic unless the team tries for a 2 pt conversion. (Failure to get two pts and the TD is only worth 6.)

2. Three downs instead of four. This is one thing the Canadians got right.

3. Get rid of all those useless time-wasting penalties, like illegal formation, illegal motion. You know, the ones that happen while no one is actually playing. If you’re on your side of the ball, it’s good. Start the play…

Golf first.

I suggest a new sport where we send all the NASCAR drivers through a golf course while the Whatever Snobbish Open is playing, awarding Death Race style points to the drivers for running over pro golfers.

And then we arrest all of those same drivers on vehicular homicide charges and eliminate two horrible sports at once…

Nice grumpy old men thread.

Grumpy old men don’t complain about golf. They complain about other sports while playing golf…

Now now, don't sell yourself short.

In basketball one obvious issue is that the 3 point shot has become so prevalent.

The attached image is pretty startling in that regard.
