No reason to add Meidroth et al until they actually need a place on the roster next season. For the offseason, I wouldn't bother adding them.

Exactly, we won't add them, until they are ready for a call-up.

Even if we know one will be on the opening day 26, we will wait until the end to do it.

Anthony (3-4 w BB) with 2 dingers, tonight. Promote him!

Campbell & Teel 2-5

No Mayer in line-up.

Sikes 3-5 w HR

ICoffey is 8-2 (3.84) after 5 IP, 3H, 2ER, 3BB, 2K

GRE is up 7-0 through 5.

E R-C: 5IP, 3H, 0ER, 1BB, 3K

Romero 3-3 w HR & 2B (.832, now)

Bleis 2-3

Gotta think some guys will be promoted to fill the holes of traded players- not just for that reason, but because they have earned it and could use a greater challenge.

Anthony, Mayer, Teel & maybe Campbell, Jordan or Dobbins to AAA

Maybe...

Jh Garica, Castro, Romero & E R-C to AA

Valera, Cohen (maybe Dean) and Arias to GRE

According to soxprospec ts.com, we lost the following ranked prospects near the deadline:

12. Yorke (might have moved up to 10-11)

13. Lugo

15. Paulino

28. C Coffey

29. Portes

37. Zeferjahn

50. Walter (DFA)

Other than moving up by attrition, I doubt we see many major jumps or falls. I'm guessing they go like this (not my picks:)

1. Anthony (1)

2. Mayer (2)

3. Teel (3)

4. Campbell (5, was 22)

5. Bleis (4)

6. Perales (6) may fall some, due to injury

7. Cespedes (6) injury will not help

8. Sandlin (9, was 12)

9. Fitts (8, was 9)

10. Meidroth (11, was 14)

11. Arias (14, was 25)

12. E R-C (16, was 23)

13. Zanetello (10, was 13)

14. Jh Garcia (23, was 49)

15. Castro (17, was 15)

24. B Horn (32, -)

25. J Paez (38, 48)

26. Gonzalez (20, was 8)

27. Monegro (25, was 21)

28. Ascensio (NR)

29. Riemer (NR)

30. N Dean (46, NR)

Mickey Romero GRE: 50 G, 858 OPS, 9 HR

At the same age, Yorke was struggling at the same level: 80 G, 668 OPS, 11 HR

Both players dealt with injuries that held them out at times. It'll be interesting to see if Romero's defense keeps him in the org for a while or if the Sox move on from him as well. He could be important insurance for Mayer since Marcelo also has his own injury concerns.

On cue:

@SoxProspects

Our @SPChrisHatfield is reporting that Marcelo Mayer is headed to the Portland 7-day IL for the hip issue that led to him leaving Tuesday's game and missing yesterday's.

Team source says they only expect him to need the minimum stint.

@redsoxstats

Kristian Campbell has 1 strikeout and 6 walks in his last 10 games/47 plate appearances.

Strikeout rate

27% High-A

15% Double-A

Swinging strike rate

12% High-A

7% Double-A

I'm glad they didn't "sell high" on Campbell. I want to see him into next year.

Add another 4 for Valera.

Just 1 hit and 3 BB!

They see guys like Portes and Valera everyday. Need to trust that they are keeping the right ones and letting expendable ones go.

Valdez 5 for 5, but he also threw the ball away twice!

Early struggled to find his command in the first inning, then he figured it out and looked really good after that.

Penrod was cruising and then ran out of gas in the third I think.

Salem's pen got shelled, but Kirwin did ok in his start:

5IP, 6H, 2ER, 2BB, 6K

Brannon homered

I wonder if they need to think about moving Penrod to the pen. He needs to be put on the 40 man this offseason or he automatically becomes a MiLB free agent.

Connelly Early led all of Double-A in swings and misses yesterday with 16 in his second start at the level for Portland.

Early’s numbers from his two starts:

2.79 ERA, 9.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 11 K.

There is worry that his stuff isn't going to play up as he advances, but all these swing and misses are a good sign.

In the third inning yesterday, the announcers said he was throwing a lot of sliders (which looked like clurves to me) maybe that was intentional and part of his injury recovery???? The sliders generated loud contact

I thought after the first inning his stuff was pretty good. His stuff will never be winklenan good, but it is not bad either!

Without command and control, he was serving up meatballs in the first inning.

He throws a 4 seam, a changeup and a slider. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/gamefeed?date=2024-08-01&chartType=pitch&legendType=pitchName&playerType=pitcher&inning=&count=&pitchHand=&batSide=&descFilter=&ptFilter=&resultFilter=&hf=pitchVelocity&sportId=11&liveAb=#752141

The vertical break on his slider doesn't dip as much as Houck's or even Wyatt Old's in the same game. SoxProspects says that he throws two versions and that the sweeper has more depth than the slider. Statcast didn't differentiate between sweeper or slider in this outing. His velo was definitely all over the place in this outing.

Anthony is hitting breaking balls much better now than at the beginning of the year. He could have the sweetest swing of any prospect in the Red Sox minor league system.
