Ok but all of these were free agents with the sole exception of Judge.

Do you have nearly as many examples with contract extensions?

As mentioned, we have info on extension offers to Lester, Betts and Bogaerts.

We're gonna need you to move the 45 yard field goal try back about 20 yards...

My other question is simple. You keep citing no one in the Boston organization refuted any counterclaims. Have you ever heard of any team ever refuting a claim like that? Or for any type of offer? I can’t think of any offhand, but that doesn’t mean I believe every single offer I’ve ever heard of was reported accurately.

And in this case, you have heard it refuted. By Merloni, right? But he gets dismissed because “he’s a company guy.” Well, do we need it dismissed by a neutral third party now? Isn’t Betts a “company guy” when it comes to his personal brand?

What it comes down to with me is 1) I understand I will never know all the details 2) teams rarely speak publicly on these things, which is usually political 3) most fans side with the players because that gives them a side that it’s easier to fault. But that’s didn’t mean they are getting the truth, rather just a truth they want…

Why? Betts was never a free agent. Comparing his situation to free agents is apples and basketballs…

Just to be clear, for me this is not about siding with the players. I'm not shedding any tears for Lester, Betts and Bogaerts. They got paid handsomely.

It's about siding with the fans.

We’re always going to be in the dark.

We all would have greatly preferred Betts over Bogaerts/Sale, but the latter two were consolation prizes. I’m not sure I find it believable that a Henry poopoo’d $300mill for Betts but rubber stamped $265mill for Sale and Bogaerts, all in the same week.

I think Betts really, really wanted to try free agency. And it took a partially canceled season to change his mind. The Dodgers took a weekend to extend Glasnow; that’s how it has historically gone for most players. But it took months to extend Betts. Maybe he wasn’t so amenable at first with them either…

So maybe the offer to Betts was around the same, 265 mill. As long as we're idly speculating and all.

And kicking into the wind. JH has been revered. He’s been cheered, and he’s been jeered. He’s deserved it all.

Maybe.

Or maybe between $265-300mill?

Do we really want to believe Henry refused to spend for the healthy future Hall of Famer but greenlighted the injured pitcher with body mechanics concerns?

If the offer was 265, he still would have gotten more as a FA with the Dodgers. The Sox were still intending on lowballing Mookie the way Xander was and the way Lester was.

I think Bogey was going to get extended anyways regardless of what Betts did, but who knows if Sale would have. Either way I don’t think Bogey was any consolation prize, and Sale turned out to be the booby prize.

He greenlighted the Sale contract because it was much smaller and he hated that it was signed right after. He openly bitched about it.

The argument is that Henry refused to pay market value for the Hall of Famer.

I wish we extended all three, but it's not like we never extended good to great players. We actually did extend Bogey- just not twice, and the opt out hurt.

We extended Pedro & Schilling.

We extended papi many times.

We extended Beckett & Porcello.

We extended Bogey & Sale.

We extended Devers.

I'm sure I missed a few other.

We rightly did not extend Ellsbury and a few others that declined after leaving us.

It's not like we've gotten it wrong, every time, but feel that Betts was in a class by himself and demanded extra attention and resolve to get it done.

JH chose Bogey & Sale over Betts. He was never going to do all three, IMO.

I keep on saying that I think Bogey was going to get extended regardless of what happened to Mookie, so I don’t think it was a Bogey, and Sale over a Mookie choosing.

And now none of them are here. If he chose Betts, he'd still be here.

Indeed.

JH's biggest blunder- way worse than Lester, Beltre, DLowe or anyone else.

Pedro was not extended

I found this on Pedro...

The Red Sox signed Martinez almost immediately to a six-year, $75 million extension that included a $17.5 million option for 2004. Martinez's overall body of work over those seven seasons with Boston? A 117-37 record with a 2.52 ERA and 1,683 strikeouts in 1,383 2/3 innings.

Somebody checked the website for this year's Winter Weekend and noticed there is no Town Hall included in the events.

Too rich for Henry's blood.

Or he's literally afraid there might be blood.

I don’t blame him, because he doesn’t have his bodyguard Bloom to take the barbs for him this year.

And Breslow doesn't deserve the abuse. Yet.

Ok, owners, if you're not interested in spending on old free agents, then the plan must be to rely on cheaper young guys developed in the system.

So... where are the longterm contracts to lock up your future core -- before they become stars and want fair market rate (and need to be dumped) -- you Mookie-trading MOOKS!

Even freaking Milwaukee -- that bastion of domestic beer breweries, but otherwise mid to small market sports city -- just gave an eight-year contract to a minor leaguer who hasn't even made the majors!

Is the total lack of any extension talk for guys like Bello and Casas further evidence that these current owners will soon be former owners???

They heard Carrabis didn't want to MC.

I'd extend Casas, but wouldn't extend Bello. I'd consider offering an extension to Teel or Anthony at the end of this season.

First, you have to buy the club from Henry... but don't bet on him even extending his hand to shake on it.
