Mayer was a top 5 prospect in all the game. Has anyone that highly regarded every been traded for 1 year or less of a player???

He may not be top 5 in the upcoming winter rankings.

Wasn't HanRam a top 5 prospect, when we traded him (and A Sanchez) for 1 year of Beckett (and salary dump Lowell?) We later extended Beckett.

It doesn't matter if you have an extension of a framework worked out. The value of Mayer over the next 6 years is higher than Soto for 1 year.

If an extension is agreed upon, it's not 1 year.

Just a framework would not be good enough, agreed.

Moncada was once Baseball America's Number One prospect -- and he was traded for a skinny southpaw, who was also extended (soooooo extended he snapped the tendons and ligaments in his shoulder, his elbow, and the patience of Red Sox Nation).

Sale had 2 years and one very reasonable option left at the time of that trade. (Also BA had Moncada at #2)…

You’re still trading for one year. Any extension you get is done on your own time. And there is a risk the player will not sign one…

My second point was about the extension being agreed upon as a condition of the trade.

He was asking about top prospects for 1 year players.

That’s not going to happen.

Juan Soto has his own interests to take into account and they very likely do not sync up with the interests of the Padres or Red Sox. There’s a reason the 72 hour window to negotiate died off decades ago..

Hanley was #30 for Baseball America the following spring. Sox also got Lowell and Mota.

I can't remember the last time it has happened. Many feel the Sox and AGon had a "wink-wink" deal in place, when we got him.

No, I don't think Soto would agree to an extension, unless he felt it would be a top offer, anyway.

I thought HRam was top 5 at the time of the trade.

Oh well.

He was the Sox #1 prospect at the time for sure. Sanchez was a good prospect too.

He was close enough. Only 5 guys get to be in the top 5…

Red Sox lose Kaleb Ort to the Mariners via waivers

Ort will never make it in the super-competitive AL West…

Hopefully, the Sox farm director and medical staff has a good handle on how much Mayer's struggles were due to injury and how much they were due to AA pitching. And just how much we should count on him as the future shortstop.

They just need to help him get better. Who cares about last year’s struggles? They only matter if they continue this year…

There will always be teams willing to give another shot to a guy who throws as hard as Ort.

Then why were the Sox the first ones?

Ort was playing independent league ball until he was 25 and then was buried in the Yankee organization…

Proof that mid-market clubs don't have enough interns to masquerade as posters on other clubs' fan forums.

I don't understand this post.

We will certainly find out more next season. The jump from A Ball to AA can be challenging.

Further proof of the inferiority of the AL West.

Wrong. They have won the ALCS like 7 times in the last 12 years or something.

I think a lot of the struggles had to do with the injury. He'll probably be fine.

I'm pretty sure a lot of Sox fans will be checking the box scores to see if Ort can improve his control and command with Seattle.
